TMI bloody stool, is it normal?

Recommended Posts

This is about pooping, so if you’re grossed out by stuff like that please just scroll past this. I’m 5 days post op (lap band to gastric bypass) and finally had a bowel movement, my concern is that it was completely bloody. Not just like little drops here or there, but it seemed the turd was formed out of pure blood. I know a lot has gone on with my internal plumbing because of the surgery, but I am concerned. Has anyone had personal experience with this or know of any resources that might alleviate my concerns? I’ve already put a note in to my surgeon, but I want to see what “the people” have experienced. Thanks in advance for any information.

Were you constipated prior to making that BM? It's possible that it tore your rectum on the way out. Even a tiny bit of blood will look like A LOT in the toilet!

Nope, normal BM schedule, and what came out wasn’t firm by any means. This was literally like a pint of blood. But yes, any blood, when you’re not expecting it seems like a tremendous amount haha.

it may be just blood from the surgery that your body is finally getting rid of (and nothing to worry about), but I'd call your surgeon's office and let them know just in case. Better safe than sorry.

I got a hold of my surgeon and that is exactly what she said. Blood likely entered my system during the surgery and just to monitor that it stops.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
