Smart scales and muscle loss

Recommended Posts

Ok, smart scale peeps, I have suddenly become concerned obsessed about my 5 pound muscle loss over the last two months. 🙄 I work out typically 7-8 hours per week, of which about 3+ hours are dedicated to strength training. I eat my Protein, 60-100 g/day. In spite of this, my trend from my smart scale shows a 5 pound loss of muscle (28 pounds total loss) over the last two months (since I bought the scale). What gives? Anyone else noticed muscle trending down on their smart scale during weight loss? I am frustrated since I have been working so hard to maintain muscle through this process.

Everyone loses some muscle when losing weight, it's totally normal! Imagine how much more leg muscle you needed when you were carrying around an extra 85lbs every where you went! I wouldn't even really look at your muscle mass until you are at goal weight, b/c it's just going to keep going down. Focus on your body fat percentage instead, as that will make you happy! LOL!!!

yes - when you lose weight, you'll lose fat, bone, AND muscle. It's not necessarily a bad thing since you need a lot more bone and muscle to hold up your starting weight than you do your ending weight. It's just when it's too much bone and muscle that it's an issue. If you lost 28 lbs and only five of it was muscle, I think that's pretty normal. Actually, it's probably pretty GOOD. It would likely be more than that if you weren't doing all that strength-training.

Edited to add that I agree with ChubRub. If you're concerned about the muscle, then focus on the percentages rather than the raw weight.

Thanks you guys! I guess I just needed some reassurance that I wasn’t doing badly. 🤷‍♀️ I want to maintain muscle and BMR as much as possible. If you both think my muscle loss is reasonable, I will accept it and keep doing what I am doing. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍁🍽

It's not about your scale, it's about your body. A woman's body often undergoes abrupt changes that are sometimes difficult to explain. It is in such cases, I am very helped by my smart scale https://www.amazon.com/Vont-Smart-Body-Scale-Black/dp/B08XYX8RDR/, it allows me to track changes in my weight as quickly as possible. I understand that it's sad to lose weight when you've gained muscle mass. Treat it as a feature of the female body, because at the time of ovulation and menstruation in our body changes.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
