Hello n so I am about 5 weeks out from surgery and currently not losing any weight. Been stuck at same weight since my two week follow up appointment. Am I doing something wrong? Is this normal? I started surgery at 240 pounds. I’m now down to 232 but it has been at a complete stand still. Any tips on how to fix this I’m working out about 2 to 3 times a night too. So I’m really disappointed.

Number one as everyone will say, call your doctor and ask advice. :) but so you can sleep tonight, here are some of my thoughts...Sometimes over working out can be hard on the body and make it hold onto everything. How much cumulative time are you working out each night and what activity/exercise are you doing?

Also, as I’m sure you know, stress(if I could underline it I would) makes our bodies dump chemicals that shut down our metabolism and hold onto every drop of food. Have you ever tried meditating? Maybe swap one of the 3 work outs for a meditation. There is starting to be medical evidence that meditation can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and other beneficial side effects.
Bottom line, who knows exactly why your body is behaving this way!?! But, hang in there, even if you plateau all the way to surgery. Your body will adjust and plateau throughout the process. It’s something we all struggle with and have to endure. You can do this!!! I’m cheering for you!

Totally normal. EVERYBODY and I mean EVERYBODY Stalls around Week 3 or 4. It'll start moving again in no time. Don't worry and stay off the scale for a couple of weeks.

I'm 4 weeks post RNY today.

As above if unsure ask your dietitian or doctor, but some ideas:

I'd say log your food and Fluid intake to make sure you're taking in enough fluid and so that you know what your calorie intake is. My dietitian told me about a patient who had complained he wasn't losing weight during the liquid part of the diet and when she delved into it, he was liquidising mars bars. I doubt you're doing this but always worth recording your intake I'd say?

I've always been told by doctors that building muscle can add weight (or mean that you don't lose weight), so maybe your exercise regime is building muscle at the expense of a weight loss? I haven't experienced a stall (yet!) but many people say they do have this at about 3 weeks? Only other things I can think of would be Constipation or fluid retention?

Good luck!

I started out with surgery on Aug. 19 at 241 lbs. I have had, so far,7 plateaus where I have not lost weight for at LEAST a week up to 5 weeks. I now at 3 months today weigh 204 so hang in there. It will come just not as fast as we want. Every one says these playeaus are normal.

almost everyone has their first major stall within the first 4-6 weeks of surgery. It usually happens during week 3 (thus we refer to it as "the three week stall"), but not always. Mine was weeks 2 and 3. It usually lasts 1-3 weeks. Just stick to your plan and the weight loss will start up again.

btw - if you search this site for posts on the three week stall, you'll find over 15,000 posts on it. And I'm NOT kidding. It happens to almost everyone.

Thanks for the info. I have them back to back and that's a downer but it's what I have to deal with.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
