Pre-op diet- taste changes and insomnia!

Recommended Posts

I’m starting day 9 of my pre-op diet and have noticed already that I really don’t enjoy my cup of morning coffee like I used to as it just tastes different (and I’ve always drank it black). I’ve also noticed, what others have reported, that the shakes are tasting sweeter than in the past and this is something I really don’t like anymore. I definitely enjoy my broth more than anything else I’m eating. Funny how tastes change in just 9 days.

I’ve also been struggling with insomnia the last few days. According to the internet 😅 this is likely due to being in Ketosis. Anyone else?

HAHA - No insomnia yet, but I can definitely agree on the sweetness of the shakes. It's a struggle to choke 3 down now! If you come up with another good alternative, I'd love to hear about it. I've also resorted to broth.... Good luck!

Re: Insomnia

PRE-pre-op, I was always one to sleep relatively little already (both because I had to get up multiple times a night to pee, AND because I just didn’t seem to sleep alot): I probably slept 6-7 hours a night. And on the very rare occasion I would take a nap during the day, I would not be able to sleep come bedtime.

Since a few days into pre-op, and the almost 2 years since surgery, I’ve basically become one of the undead. I probably sleep maybe 4 hours at night (but at least with no middle-of-night peeing!), but can run on even less.

The weird thing is I’m not even the least bit tired during the day 🤷🏻‍♀️

Im not sure this is because of the weight loss, the type of food I eat now, or the exercise. Most likely a combination of all.

P.S. Though I do have a sure fire way to knock myself out: eat something with a bunch of sugar (especially on an empty stomach) and I will be out cold on the couch for a couple hours, after some unpleasant dumping symptoms first, natch.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
