Foul flatulence and stools

I’m 6 years post a mini gastric bypass and still haven’t found a solution to my very very embarrassing problem. I suffer from foul smelling stools that can be runny sometimes. It causes me a great deal of embarrassment and distress.. I can’t use toilets anywhere outside my own toilet in my house.. and no one can use the toilet after me because the smell is very foul and lingers for a very long time.. I also suffer from a lot of smelly farts that usually start around evening time (hardly anything in the morning) ... no matter what I eat or what I eliminate from my diet it doesn’t cause a difference.. Does anyone seem to have a solution for this or managed to understand why? Please don’t tell me it’s my diet because I’ve tried changing it an eliminating so many things and nothing works.

What did you eliminate? And what do you typically eat?

Thank you for this. My Dr put me back on prescription meds. He said this shouldn't have gone on so long. Two weeks of strong meds and hopefully this will clear up.

mmy, I hope you found some helpful strategies that is working for you. I had never heard of SIBO until this past Friday. My surgery was in July 2017 but prior to that I was suffering from lactose intolerance, was diagnosed with intolerance to gluten, allergic to shell fish and had esophagitis from GERD . I stopped eating those foods gradually but still had issues and was on acid reflux meds. Every time I eliminated one thing something else gave me issues. After my surgery, I was doing ok for the most part until last year when the bloating started. This was followed by painful gas and irregular bowel movements. I got an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy which revealed that I had a couple of polyps in my large intestine but weirdly, one in my small intestine. Even though the Gastroenterologist said my Pancreas was ok and my enzymes were normal, I was prescribed Kreon because I didn't have enough enzymes to digest my food. So he said. I was also told to take probiotics and take in more fiber. This was in October 2020.

Some of my symptoms improved as long as I was taking the Kreon with everything I put in my mouth. At my next follow up, I asked why was taking enzymes everyday if my levels are ok and my pancreas is fine but all my symptoms had not improved? I was basically told to not look a gifted horse in the mouth, my symptom are better so be grateful. I followed up with my GP and she was not having it. She got me a referral for a second opinion. The new GI doc asked me a lot of questions and was very informative. He told me that my long history with taking meds for GERD combined with the RYN may have made me candidate for SIBO. I'm waiting for appointments to get some tests and labs done. I often borrow books from my local library about inflammation and gut issues but I rarely crack them open because I already decided that the advice would not work for me. But after my visit with the new GI doc, I searched the index of each book. Bloated Belly Whisperer by Tamara Duker Freuman has a whole chapter on SIBO (chapter eight) that eye opening for me. I'm a little bit more encouraged that there is a possible treatment for my issues.

Through my journey so far, I've found that older doctors treat me poorly when they find out that I had RNY. It's almost like they are telling my that I deserve any issues I get. I don't want to self diagnose but I can't sit back and continue to be miserable. Now I pay attention to what I'm eating, I find it difficult at times to give up certain foods. It took me 10 years to give up dairy. I developed upper respiratory infections after a while, but I couldn't give up the brie and the ice cream until I had one last bout with Bronchitis. I don't miss foods that are harmful to me, I can walk by them now with no problem. But when everything I eat is a problem, even a glass of water, I'm going to keep looking for a solution. Keep fighting mmy.

Thank you for this information. I too, have begun to eliminate foods I think are the culprit. Sadly the very first thing i stopped and started to just test was COFFEE. It breaks my heart that I can't drink it anymore but I finally know one thing that's causing me problems. It's probably a good thing that I can't have it anymore, coffee is bad so this ends up to be a good thing. I will be watching my food intake and seeing which affects me the most and continue the elimination. I will be reading more about SIBO as well. Thank you for your post, I appreciate it.

Hi again. The meds only helped as long as I was taking them. As soon as I stopped the problem came back. Is this devrom safe? How long can you stay on it? Is it for life?

Ok had the same thing. Dr said it was too much bile going into the gut causing loose stools, diarrhea and foul, very foul smelling stool. Dr gave me colestipol prescription granules and all of it disappeared overnight so after months and months of all this, the colestipol stopped it in one day. Anyway I now am down to once or twice a week taking the colestipol and I am normal again. No diarrhea, no loose stool, no foul smelling stools and no more very foul constant gas etc no nothing. Ps if I don’t take granules at least once a week it will come back in 2-3 days all the foul everything. But once I take it again it goes away in a day. The exact name of my prescription is colestipol hydrochloride for oral suspension 500 grams

Would this be the case if they also took out your gall bladder?

Are taking any medication like Omaprozol? Also, are taking a good pro biotic? Sounds like your guy microbiomes are out of balance.
Please find a Dr that will give you a GI Maps test. You can do it at home and send it off. It will tell you so much about your gut health!

I was worried about this when I was considering bypass and I read about a filter you put in your pants for flatulence. That could help one of your issues.

I have the same thing, 5 months P.O. I figure it's because the food goes through so fast? EIther way, I just take Imodium or gas pills, depending on which I need at the moment. I hope it will straighten out on it's own.

Can I ask please if I may…

were you or could you be impacted? I suffer from IBS and literally had old poo inside that could have been in situ for 5 years. The runs you describe sound very much like ‘overflow’. As you are 6 years post op I wanted to suggest this for you to exclude it.

the second suggestion I have is you have food intolerances. May I suggest testing or excluding certain allergens for 6 weeks each. Ie. Gluten. Lactose. Soy. Nuts. Barley. Etc etc.

in my experience your description sounds like one of these issues.

good luck and I hope you find this helpful. ❤️❤️

Have you tried taking Devrom? I read an article from an MD who had WLS. You can get off Amazon, it contains chlorophyll and is branded as an internal deodorant.
