"Football build" men - concerns about becoming 'skinny' after WLS?

Recommended Posts

My husband plans to get the sleeve in a few weeks. He's 6'0" and 300 pounds and 35 years old. At his peak shape in his early 20's he was 190lbs with a very muscular upper body. He's hoping to get back there but has voiced some concerns about becoming 'skinny' which has never been his build, he doesn't want to lose his muscular chest/arms. Is this a matter of making sure he exercises/lifts? Can he keep that general build with WLS? Any personal experience would be great and if someone has another thread with photos to point us to that would be great.

Hi-

There are some threads here that have before/after pictures of men. There was one in particular called "calling all men" that you could probably search for and find. Just recently there is one called "before and after pics" that show many of the men who lift, and all I can say is "Welcome to the Gun Show"! As long as he lifts he'll likely still have that nice "beefy" look and still be lean.

I'm glad that y'all gave up on that "one year lap-band" idea. I think he will get better results with the sleeve and it will be easier to live with in the long run. Good luck!

This is just my experience and unfortunately i went from being a large guy to thin, I have lost all the fat but he will loose alot of muscle also, I have begun to add muscle but slowly, I was on a mission to shag the pounds regardless of the muscle loss, If i was to go back i would focused on losing weight but working out also to keep the muscle.

Not gonna lie, its a lot of hard work, especially early on because you cant eat a lot to really build muscle. But i started going hard 2 weeks after surgery and havent stopped. Im Happy where im at now. Eventually going to try to build more muscle. But it is a process, and losing the weight and being healthy is what is most important first.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
