Rib pain on inhalation

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

i am 5 days post op and things seemed to be going along fine until yesterday. I started getting a pain under my ribs on the left side when I inhale. It hurts and definitely isn’t normal. The pain seems to travel a bit up and toward the back of my shoulder. I thought it was gas but it’s doesn’t seem to be letting up. I’ll call the dr in the morning but was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. Thanks in advance 😊

Yup. I'm 5 days post op and have exactly the same pain in the same place!! It is the worst of all my areas of pain. Im going to see my GP today for another reason and will ask about it. Feel better!

Oh, I hope you feel better too! If you don’t mind, could you let me know what your gp says?

Hi. She didn't say anything about the pain, but when I spoke to my surgeon's office the nurse was concerned. She said to give it til Thursday to start getting better. And if it doesn't, I'm to call their office. She asked if I was short of breath, which I'm not. How are you doing? Any better?

I called the dr as well. They said if it doesn't get better by Friday I should come in. Yesterday afternoon it began to improve a bit. It's still there but doesn't seem as intense when I inhale. I also spoke to the nutritionist yesterday and she said I could start pureed food. Well, I overdid it and definitely felt it! I just got so excited to eat something other than optifast! This is so hard!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
