Lifting weight/working out

Recommended Posts

So I am a months and a few days post op of getting the sleeve done. Prior to surgery I have always been an active person I enjoyed football and lifting in high school. After I high school I always continued of and on lifting weight 4-5 days a week. Question is how long did some of y’all wait to get back into the gym lifting wise? I use cardio machines and sauna but wanting to get back into lifting

I was doing cardio in the gym 2 weeks post-surgery, but my doctor said to wait 6 weeks before doing any lifting greater than 10 pounds and to be careful and increase weight gradually.

Start light. If you tolerate it well, slowly build up. If you don't tolerate it well yet, tell yourself it's okay & try again in a week or so. Be kind to yourself & don't expect to pick up where you left off. You'll be back there soon enough. Good luck! You are not alone.

Has your medical team cleared you to lift more than 10 pounds? (That was my initial restriction after surgery.) I was cleared to lift as tolerated at my 2 week post op visit. Start slow and go with lower weights than you were lifting pre-surgery to give your body some time to adjust.

Yes after 2 weeks I was cleared of 10 and after a month I was cleared to start lifting. Starting a slow is gonna be tough but definitely don’t want something to go wrong

You want to start slow with weights. I ended up with an incisional hernia from a 2009 gallbladder removal. I had to lose weight before the hernia repair. They’re awful. I’m getting bypass in less than 2 weeks and plan on nothing but walking for 4 weeks. I have to continue physio for a shoulder surgery but we’ll reduce weight.

Definitely don’t want a hernia. I was mainly wondering cause I go back to work next week and it’s in construction. Not awfully demanding but there are times when it is.

Ask your doctor. You have to be careful what you lift. I had to lift my 25 lbs dog the night I got home from sleeve. Lift from the legs not the core. Got through sleeve with no hernia.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
