Exercise after Surgery

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me when they started exercising after surgery and what you did? I saw on here that the doctors want you to walk immediately to help with the aftereffects of the surgery but was wondering when and what type of exercise others are doing and how soon after surgery?

Usually your doctor clears you for exercise in stages, first for light activity and then for full activity. They always say "If it hurts, stop!"

For the first couple of weeks, I walked on a treadmill. After that, I was cleared for extra cardio and weights.

Yes, walking starts almost as soon as you wake up from surgery. You'll be on some level of restriction for a while, I couldn't lift more than 10 lbs for 6 weeks. Afterwards I was cleared for certain levels of exercise, and then more shortly thereafter. It's subjective and personal based on a number of factors. But always listen to your doctors!

i started walking immediately after surgery, short walks tried pushing myself more and more each day, on my third day i got a dog which helped me to walk more, i was walking 5 km daily, 2 weeks post surgery i was cleared to do some light weights nothing that made me push or use my stomach, so i was doing my cardio and the weights

talk to your Dr. every single one has a different handbook.

im 6 month post op and im down 121 lbs im already below my goal so now im trying to lift more weights

My focus is on cardio right now. I get on the treadmill and go high incline low speed to make sure I don’t hurt myself while I build up endurance.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
