One day post op

Recommended Posts

Well I’m nearly 24 hours post op and thought I’d update for folks whose surgery is coming up and are curious what the experience has been like for me so far. I have three different IV sites. But one got pulled. A Foley catheter, SCDs and had oxygen on until this morning. I have a JP drain on my left side that is definitely the most painful part for me. Yesterday the pain was much more than I anticipated. It has improved some today but I can’t wait til the drain comes out.

The liquid pain medication is pretty rough to handle. But zofran helps.

Did my leak test and awaiting results. Enjoying ice
chips with no problem.

Her callout says she had the sleeve, and the leak test *generally* is for sleeve only as well.

Sorry you're in so much pain. Do you know how long you'll have your drain for? I know mine keeps it in for a week

I passed leak test. They pulled my drain and Foley. Brought me a tray. Water and ice chips are great. broth was nasty. Did a lap around the unit. Brushed my teeth and used bathroom. Time for a snooze

I had a JP drain, my surgeon had me have it for a week. It annoyed me more than anything but the lower right incision pain was the kicker for me. I was cleared to swallow pills as soon as I got home. Every day gets easier and better. Maybe you'll be like me.and cry in the department store when you.find out that 3XL you wore is now an XL and not plus sized! Welcome to your new life

Day 4 post op now. Yesterday was a rough start. Horrible gas pain. It sounded like an alien in my body. And then severe nausea. Walked countless laps around hospital and got a better anti-emetic on board that did the trick. Got released, took a nice long hot shower which was wonderful and was able to get in some solid sleep. The hospital had a hell of a time getting an IV in me. They stuck me 15 times and finally put in a central line!! A triple lumen subclavian. I was like what the HECK??? I don't even know what happened because I have good and visible veins, but I look like I've been in a terrible accident basically from waist up. Today has been much better. No problem getting my 64 ounces of clear fluids in today. And pain has been manageable. Some gas still and some incision pain, but taking my walks and sipping my Water and just staying as relaxed as I can and not getting ahead of myself. Mixing pain med with some water helps it go down SO much easier. Didn't need any Zofran today. Hopefully tomorrow will continue to get better in this way too. Not in a rush to advance diet. Pre-op, I was terrified of how slow post op diet moves. No purees til Nov 14??? Now, I'm like 2 weeks of Clear Liquids sounds like a solid plan to me. What's the rush? :) We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Leak test is just an Xray 24 hours post op where you drink some liquid to make sure none of it is leaking along the staple line. Since the stomach becomes so high pressure in the sleeve, they sometimes like to make sure it's really sealed so that no gastric juices are leaking out into your peritoneum before they take you off IV fluids and put you on oral fluids.

And if you think about it, the sleever does have a long staple line that could pop open. Better, safe than to,just, trust in YOUR luck🍀

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
