6 week post-op update

Today makes 6 weeks since my surgery and I officially go back to regular foods. It has definitely been a journey, learning my new stomach during this process. I have begun to eat food that I never liked before and certain foods that I used to love, I truly despise now. I have learned my stomach no longer likes chicken and i'm okay with that. Vegetables are my best friend so far. Some sugar free drinks actually taste too sweet and I have to Water them down. My weight is coming off at a steady and not too rapid pace, which I am glad of. I can tell the difference with the weight I have lost so far. I can now walk up a flight of stairs normally. I used to have to walk one step at a time. My blood pressure and sleep apnea are steadily improving and I have more energy now. I am happy that I went through with the surgery overall.

Hey, AlteredReality. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Amazing results. I am sooo happy for you.

It's hard, though, not to compare results. My guess is that my slower weight loss has something to do with the fact that I have been unable to fully incorporate exercise into my plan. I have; however, broken my first milestone of 250, so there's that. My next milestone will be under 200.

My leg still cramps up. I'll be seeing my new primary today. (The primary I adored --the one who believed my pain, and treated me like a valuable person-- just retired.:( ) This crampy leg is not the pain I'm referring to. My challenge is the chronic pain in my right ankle THAT CANNOT BE FIXED.

Thank you so much. Congrats on making 250! Try not to compare your progress though. We all lose at different paces. I know it can feel somewhat disappointing at times, when you're not seeing a lot of weight coming off. You're just dealing with other health issues, that are making things go at a slower pace. Don't beat yourself up about it. Just do what you can. Exercising sitting down, doing low impact exercises would be a good way for you to be active. Just don't over push yourself. I hope your new doctor will be able to help you. I'm rooting for your success![emoji4]

@AlteredReality Your kind words mean a lot. We started our journeys at about the same time, so we'll forever be buddies in that sense. Isn't it funny how we know better about things like comparing but allow our minds to make irrational conclusions anyway?

My oldest son and his wife (both doctors) sent me some unflavored collagen peptides 18g Protein today. All I see is that it contains bovine hide collagen peptides. Why don't they just say cow hide?! I guess the kids sent this because it supports skin, hair, nail and joint support. Not sure what'll do for my cramping, but I'm willing to try it. I wonder if adding it to something hot* would degrade the ingredients.

*After reading the label more carefully it says that I can add it to Water, coffee, smoothies, and recipes. The ingredients are easily digestible, mix in hot or cold liquids and can be taken any time of day.

I'm thankful for you and the way you always have something good to share, as well as great words of encouragement. Yes we will always be buddies in this journey. I hope the peptides work well for you. It's great that it will help with hair. I know I have to get something to help in that area, due to my hair starting to shed really bad, from the weight loss. My surgeon recommended Biotin supplements, so I will try them out and see if it helps. Keep your head up and don't get discouraged!

Congrats for both of ladies. You both have a week on me. I'm progressing very slowly into foods. Not that I'm having problems, but I'm just not that hungry and don't feel like pureeing chicken. My BP has went down quite a bit as well, it's amazing how much this helps. It's not like I am anywhere near what I should be at, yet my BP went from a solid borderline to basically perfect.

I don't know about you ladies, but I definitely don't fit in my old clothes anymore. I'm too cheap to buy anything that I know will be transient, so I just cinch up the belt a bit. Most definitely stairs hurt less. Glad you're both having steady progress!

Update on my new primary. It turns out that she and my youngest son were in the same medical school class. She's a fresh, young doctor with a caring spirit. With a little more experience and confidence, she'll make a truly terrific doctor. (My son said she was a nice person in medical school.) Anyway, she believes in me... and is someone I think I can trust.

I'm celebrating my second milestone: 200lbs. My first milestone was 250. My doctor said he'd be happy with a goal weight of 150. I'm hoping for 130.

How much harder is it to lose those final pounds? The first 100 just seemed to fall off. Am I incorrect to assume that my remaining 50-70lbs will be my most difficult hurdle? My assumption is based on nothing scientific or logical, just a gut feeling.

How much harder is it to lose those final pounds? The first 100 just seemed to fall off. Am I incorrect to assume that my remaining 50-70lbs will be my most difficult hurdle? My assumption is based on nothing scientific or logical, just a gut feeling.

I actually need to update them. I'm at 169 lbs. now. I'm currently wearing a size 10, but I will be needing a size 8 probably before the month is over. I'm 4 lbs. from my goal weight. I think i'm going to try and go down to 145 lbs. instead.

So happy and proud of you, AlteredReality. You inspire me. My boo-boo act is just that. It's more fun to pretend to be all depressed and crushed! Self-deprecating humor is a powerful motivator for me. I am genuinely thrilled that you are doing so well. I am proud of myself, too. We should both be proud!!

@AlteredReality. What a beautiful user pic. You should be a poster patient to inspire those on the fence about the benefits of gastric bypass. I'm still behind you in terms of weight lost, but I am losing. I am so proud of myself.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
