I will be attending the initial meeting at the WLC later this month and had a few questions for anyone that's done self-pay before...

The clinic I am wanting to get my sleeve done at advertises their 'self pay' cost. Would that typically include your hospital stay and pre-op appointments? I realize this is definitely a question I can (and plan to) bring up during this seminar BUT I wanted to gather any details I can ahead of time from people who've already been through it.

If you were self-pay and could share any details about your experience, that would be fantastic.

Thanks for helping this newbie out. :-)

I am going through Texas Bariatric Specialists, Dr. Patel is the lead surgeon, but my surgeon will be Dr. Reddy. The prices on their web site are fairly accurate. My actual surgery cost will be $8,999.00 for gastric sleeve performed in their surgical center. If the hospital was required the cost would be $13,000.00. This price includes life time follow up in their clinics, which is a big reason why I chose them. Also, they have an awesome success rate, lots of surgeries completed, and a clinic located close to where I live. If you have any health insurance your primary may cover some of the other testing required prior to surgery. My expenses prior to surgery, sleep study, psych eval, nutrition appointment, labs, swallow study and pending EKG, Chest X-RAY, more labs and 2 more office visits will total between $3,500-$4,000. The labs were the most expensive thing. I have paid for everything to date, but will use Care Credit for the actual surgery cost which they collect prior to surgery (I will be paying at my next appointment this Friday). My surgery date is 6/11/18. There are other medical credit options as well, Care Credit just had a better interest rate for pay off within two years and since I had to open a credit line at least this one can be used for vet bills as well!

I will also be receiving documents from the Clinic for medical Tax right off (between the surgery and my 17 year old's allergy shots, I am hoping Uncle Sam doesn't get anything next tax year). This was the right choice for me, but everyone's situation is different and it appears that Mexico is much cheaper and the hotels in the pics look awesome.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
