Approaching surgery date is freaking me out!!

Recommended Posts

My surgery is Thursday the 12th if April and I too am freaking out! I called to see if I could take a Xanax the morning of! That being said I know that I am doing this for the right reasons and that this is a very safe surgery. And we’ve been pre tested by a million doctors who don’t want this to fail either! We can do this. Just take deep breaths in and out until the wave of panic subsides. Sending positive vibes your way.

The post-op road has not been an easy one to travel for me but what kept me going was the clear knowledge that every day I would become a little healthier. Immediately after surgery, I went from 7 medications to 1. Celebrate every win, no matter how small it may seem. Also, be patient with yourself and allow time to heal and feel better. Today is the first day that I actually feel like myself and I am 28 days post-op. I finally have the energy, desire, and drive to go join a gym and get my workout on. When times are tough, just keep looking hour to hour and day to day.
Also, please don't make the mistake I did by tempting fate and trying to go back to old habits. I had a soft pretzel after only two weeks post-op and I felt miserable for days. That alone probably caused some significant setbacks and is why it took me almost 30 days to feel strong. In my previous life, food was joy, happiness, sadness, and pleasure. I reached for the soft pretzel precisely because I was feeling sad and bereft. Not only did it taste like saw dust and feel very bad in my stomach, but I felt absolutely no satisfaction in eating it, whereas previously it would have been an instant pick me up. Post-surgery will be an immense change. If you are an emotional eater, my guess is after this surgery, eating won't produce the same result as it used to.

Thank you for all the advice! I'm taking in all the information I get! It is good to hear that you are now starting to feel better!

I too, am an emotional/stress eater. That will be my biggest obstacle is replacing my food habit with something more healthy. I will most likely be seeking a therapist for extra support.

Just an update I had the surgery on April 12th. He repaired an umbilical hernia and a hiatal hernia. Pain wasn’t bad at all and went home the next day. Now 7 days out and I lost 9 lbs already. Learning to sip lol. Thanks for all of the good wishes.

Glad all went well with surgery!! I'm at the hospital right now and scheduled for surgery at 7am today. I can't believe how fast this day has come! Still a little anxious, but trying to stay calm!

Hi all!!

So surgery went well on Wednesday! The gas pains was definitely the worse part. I had to stay in the hospital until Friday to monitor my oxygen level issues.

Pain is not too bad right now. I'm having trouble getting to both my Water and Protein goal. I've gotten down about 2 water bottles a day. And I finished about 3/4 of a Protein Shake, but was having some pain after drinking it. I'm guessing that should slowly get better.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
