as little as possible. travel toothbrush and paste some comfortable pj's if you hate hospitals gowns and well nothing else unless you are scheduled for more than a day. i slept most of day of surgery and spent the night walking in circles around the 3rd floor. and went home around 10 a.m. the next day after surgery so i needed nothing. Some people spend longer in hospital so needs might change. Also i am a guy and we just dont care what we look like or wear most of the time so there is that. LOL

I still plan to take Biotene( for dry mouth) and GasX(for gas bubbles etc) and chapstick. A hairbrush because we girls like to look smoothed out, not like the Wild Woman of Borneo. Besides I'll probably have dark circles under my eyes and drawn out looking because I'm Celtic pale with strawberry blonde(okay okay I admit it, RED) hair. A little under 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide, I don't tend to fade into the woodwork real easily. They had better have taken Paxil or Mellaril because I'm Coming. They have only a month or so to brace themselves[emoji13]LOL

I was planning on toothpaste toothbrush, change of clothes Kus I hate the gowns and slippers!! How’s that sound I actually like messy hair and a messy bun that’s my look! I hardly brush my hair unless I’m blow drying it. Other than that I think I’ll be good as long as my lashes are done lol!

The will to start drinking as soon as you wake up so you can get the hell out of the hospital as soon as possible.

That's interesting. My Dr. does an upper GI the day after surgery to ensure that there are no leaks. No drinking before that. Then, my upper GI got delayed until afternoon, so I didn't get to drink anything until about 4pm the day after surgery! Man, did that Water taste good!

I overpacked. The only things I ended up using were, tooth brush, toothpaste, change of clothes to go home, phone, iPad, chargers, chapstick, hairband to make a messy bun.

@sillykitty that would be my mistake as well (overpacking) but I’m glad I asked. My messy bun is my life and my lashes I don’t want to look extremely dead I know my husband will be taking lots of pictures lol

Chapstick.

Lounge pants or PJ Bottoms.....your IV will prevent you from changing your top for a bit...so just get some PJ type pants on your butt and you will feel much less breezy roaming the halls with your IV pole. Robes and stuff...don't bring them for the same reason. You'd have to thread your IV's through the arms and depending on the equipment, that's not gonna happen.

Your own pillow from home. Comforting to sleep on, and smells like home.

Biotene spray. You have never experienced dry mouth like this before. Your tongue will be sandpaper. Bring Biotene.

I brought stuff to do my make up and hair and a comfortable outfit to go home in. Think stretchy waist:)

Also...

Your phone charger.

Your Phone.

Your approval letter from your insurance company. I brought this one a whim, and was so glad I did. They mixed my name up with another woman with the same name and were trying to bill the wrong insurance and it was getting rejected and people were panicking. LOL. The letter straightened it all out.

Wow, did that mean you had to stay 2 nights? I can't even imagine that. The 18 hours I spent in the hospital were the some of the most miserable in my life.

I hardly used anything I took... only used

Towel, wet wipes, toothbrush paste, extra clothes, hair pin, brush, phone charger and some noise cancellation beats. The rest it was provided. Even the underwear ( I prefer the one they have very comfortable) I took some either way.

So after the upper GI you were able to get up to 4oz an hour of liquids? That was impressively fast.

Oh, yeah, even the first hour. In fact, I'd drink the little cup of Water, then watch the clock tick sloooowly for 10-11 minutes before I could have the next one. After a week, the doctor released me to drink as much as I wanted, which went up to about 100 oz. per day pretty quickly. I know a lot of people struggle with the water, but I wasn't one of them.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
