2 years post op- gaining weight -HELP

Recommended Posts

I’m 2 yrs post op New Year’s Eve. My goal is 165. I was at 179 at my lowest and just got on the scale and I’m 188. Kind of freaking out, drive to work is a lot longer and I find myself eating and having less energy cause my day is 2 1/2 hours longer. I’m craving junk food and am struggling with that and Portion Control. Should I go back to the beginning and have 2 Protein Shakes and a dinner? Ugh. These food issues and bad behaviors will never go away. I do see someone every 2 weeks to talk to.. things feel like they’re spiraling and I’ve got to nip this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't feel like I'm fully qualified to give advice on this since I'm not even a year out yet, but I will say that even at 8 months it's easy to slide out of good habits and start allowing some of the old habits to creep back in. I just had a visit with my nutritionist about 2 weeks ago and she set me straight. We went over my food log and exercise habits, and made some new goals. I had been losing pretty slowly through December and the beginning of January, but since my appointment, I have re-committed to following my plan without the "treats" I was allowing for good behavior, and my weight loss has picked up again.

I really think that seeing a nutritionist/dietician individually has been the most helpful on my journey. I also track everything I eat, my Water intake, and exercise. If you don't already do those things, maybe they would be helpful for you as well.

Good luck getting back on plan. You know you can do this, because you have done it before!

Thank you for responding so quickly and for the support. I envy that you’re so organized. I had a nutritionist while going through the prep and after surgery. She was ok, and I will say I was definitely more accountable with my food. Since this was not. Overed by my insurance any visit to Dr and staff would be completely out of pocket and I can’t swing that. My husband is supportive but that’s about it. I have to find that spark and go forward. I am afraid my stomach is bigger and won’t get small again cause it’s definitely holding more food. Stress is such an awful thing.. lol. Thank you for your positivity and support.

Congrats on your losses and on recognizing the need to tighten your habits back up.

Many insurances will give you vouchers to do Weight Watchers. You could do their core or points plus stuff!

Also go back to basics:

Weigh/measure EVERYTHING. Log it.

3oz Protein (eat it first)

then low glycemic veggies

low glycemic fruits

healthy fats

nuts/seeds

And until you reach goal, kick the crap and high glycemic carby crap to the curb.

Follow the no eating while drinking rules your doc first gave you. It will be hard at first. But after 3-4 days, you will be back feeling your pouch resistance again. I'm not a vet, but I swear, I scour these boards for successful vets long term practices and to a person, they are doing this. They FOLLOW the rules. You know there is no magic bus ride. ((hugs)) And just keep on fighting the good fight!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
