Hello, I am starting my pre-op liquid diet tomorrow and my surgery is scheduled for 2 weeks from now. I've been reading some of the posts and they are really scaring me. I was nervous before but also very excited about changing this part of my life. Is there anyone out there that has had a positive post-op experience? Also, is it true that if you have reflux prior to surgery that it will get worse after? Thank you so much.

I had an incredibly positive post op experience:) Super easy. I felt terrific then, and still do today. Very happy with my sleeve:)

Yes, people with reflux can experience worse symptoms after sleeve....but it's not a sure thing. Remember that reflux is worsened by carrying extra weight. As you lose, it might actually improve.

Also...get this.... I had some reflux before surgery. During surgery, my doctor fixed a hiatal hernia that I didn't know I had...part of my stomach had been protruding into my chest! After he fixed it, my reflux improved remarkably and is almost non-existent now.

When worrying about all the things that can go wrong with surgery....challenge yourself to think, instead, about all the health dangers associated with obesity...and how you will overcome and prevent them:)

Remember, everyones surgery is different. I also was worried about all the has pains everyone talks about and I had zero gas pains! I was up walking around about 3 hours after surgery. I had no issues whatsoever. I had surgery on Friday and was driving my kids to school on Monday. I wanted to go back to work in a week because i felt that good, but couldnt get a sooner post op appt and my employer required a release from the surgeon for me to return. I also had reflux befpre surgery and rarely have it now, if I do its because I may lay down to soon after eating. Read peoples posts but dont let them get in your head. Go into surgery date with positove vibes and just know that it will be one of the best decisions you made. Good Luck amd keep us posted on how you are doing. [emoji4]

My post-surgery experience was not bad at all. I felt just ok for the first few days but by day 5 I felt great and by day 7 I couldn't even tell something had happened! I have had no issues getting in fluids, no pains with eating, so overall it's been a very positive experience. I was very nervous too and was happy to get to the other side!

I would say this is the best decision I've ever made. I had minimal pain, no problems getting my fluids down, and no problems eating. About 2 weeks before surgery I was very nervous as well but I met some of my surgeon's other patients in the waiting room of his office and they share their experiences with me and it helped a lot.

Everything will be fine! You will be fine! Even better than fine.

I think when reading on here you probably see more of the problems because people are posting for advice or support VS just to say they feel good. Seems like there are plenty that do very well and that given the statistics most people do fine and a portion have a rough week or two, but very rarely is there a serious issue. When I decided I did notice that even folks who had serious issues all were glad they did it, which made the decision easier.

It's natural to be nervous, but hang in there and remember why you're doing it. I had a rough first week, but am glad I did it and feel like a new person!

For Reflux are you getting a hiatal hernia repair as well? I had occasional reflux prior, but in talking with the surgeon he said repairing the hiatal hernia would make me at even less risk of reflux post surgery than pre surgery and he was right!

Primrose, I'll be here with you on your journey. I will have my RnY in early-mid March, I too have a hiatal hernia which will be repaired. H.H. seem to run in my family, both my late mother and my daughter as well as oodles of cousins. Since I'm not going anywhere feel free to ask me anything, if I don't have the answer somebody on this forum will. We're in this to win this,my little buddy!

People who are just getting started and are having a rough time tend to seem more numerous than they really are on the forums. This is because the newer folks are more likely to start new threads when they have an issue that they'd like feedback or support on. This makes the top of the forums seem heavy on people with issues.

It makes sense: people are more likely to worry when everything is new and less likely to start threads later one saying "Wow, I was worried for nothing!' or "It turns out this is all okay!"

But if you click into the longer threads, you see a lot more people with moderately to extremely positive results. There's an ongoing thread right now about how great it is not to recognize yourself in the mirror because you've gotten so thin.

I followed my doctors advice and walked 45 mins a day to build up as much strength as possible prior to surgery, it also helped to relieve some stress. I believe this helped me push through the recovery and I was mowing the my lawn 4 days after surgery, however I was not moving fast took my time.

Second guessing kicks into overdrive around this point for many. I felt the same at this stage. Even though I did have some minor complications and a bit rougher start I have no regrets on my surgery. As someone else on here once told me you made this decision to have WLS when you were in a clear and rational state of mind. You've weighed out the pros and cons and decided this was what was best for you and your health. Right now is the nervous phase so it's normal to question things.

Keep in mind a lot of people will have surgery and never say anything about it, or they did have some issues and get on here for help. That may tend to skew your perception on things and make it seem as if complications run rampant. Even if you have some minor pain and discomfort in the beginning it's generally short lived and in no time you'll be back to normal.

I am 6 months post op. I feel GREAT! I would do it 100x over. Yes, you have to change your lifestyle but it's worth it!

Ya know....
I was so depressed after and regretted everything. I had to get Iv fluids multiple times after. It might be too late and I might need a picc line.

But you know what? I'm a student and, for the first time in a long time, I fit in a desk. I rode a bike.

It's hard but focus on what you'll be able to do instead of what ifs and what you can't do.
