Sleeve Post op complications-not leak?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had to deal with any sleeve post op complications not related to a leak, or just had a hard time healing in general?

I am 8 days post op and I don’t feel like I’m healing well. I have a significant amount of pain in my upper right quadrant. The whole area is still swollen and tender to the touch. Actually a bit more than “tender”. This morning I did a gentle cough, and searing ripping pain went through the area. It actually made me cry hard. I called my surgeon yesterday about the swelling and the general pain in the area and they weren’t concerned and told me to take my pain meds. But now that this searing pain from practically clearing my throat has caused me to have to lay down and not move, it’s making me feel a little anxious. I don’t go back in for follow up until late next week. I’m trying not to overreact, but I’m also trying to take care of myself.

After the surgery, the incision points are very tender at least for the first month. Coughing and sneezing will produce pain. I slept on a Water bed and getting up out of bed was extremely difficult. I never used pain meds after surgery because I have a high pain tolerance. Things should improve after you get off the blood thinners - at least the bruises will start to fade slowly.

On my discharge instructions identifying when to call your physician, many areas dealt with pain. For example:

Uncontrolled or increased abdomen pain.

Chest pain, rapid heartbeat and/or dizziness.

Changes to your incision - new pain, swelling, redness, cloudy drainage.

I don't think that type of pain is normal. If I was in your situation, I'd insist on a follow-up appointment right away. It's normal to have mild to moderate pain and a little swelling - severe pain is not normal. You should be able to move.

Record your temperature and heart rate every few hours. If they start going up...report this to the doctor.

Thank you all, my temp is holding steady at 99.4 and the pain in tolerable today. I’m checking it constantly, and as long as it doesn’t go any higher than 100, and I the pain is better, I’m going to hold off. I’m shocked at how rough of a go I’ve had so far, lol.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
