I'm in my second week and already feel I can't eat more than they said I should -4 tablespoons (purred) 4 times a day.

Are you or were you guys able to eat that much, at only 2 1/2 weeks out

Also, how much weight did you lose by your third week, beginning from surgery date?

My surgery date I was 321. I am now 305. and in two days it will be three weeks. But I think I should have lost more than 16 pounds.

Can you share what you guys lost?

I was the day after you and have been able to eat a lot of puree items. I pureed lentil Soup and could eat 2 cups of it (VERY slowly). The DR said that purees are almost liquid and go right through, which is why you can eat much more. I'm now doing soft food and that definitely sticks more and I seem to be able to eat between 1/4 and 1/2 a cup, which is about right. I think you're right on track.

Weight loss wise - I'm down about 30 lbs from start and 17 down from the surgery (my weigh in day is Tuesday, so I'm probably a little less). Right now your Water weight is going to fluctuate a lot based on Fluid intake, sodium etc. I'm getting a lot of sodium (soups / broth / shakes) and plenty of fluid, so last week my weight stayed the same, though i can see I'm noticeably thinner. My team says that around 15 per month for the first few months is typical and then it may be a little slower. I am tracking calories just to make sure and I know that at 600 - 900 calories per day I'm not maintaining or gaining so I'm not too worried about what the scale says... you shouldn't be either. You may want to take some key measurements, which will help you see the weight loss even if the scale hasn't caught up (I do bicep, thigh, chest and waist).

I've never actually seen stats on this, but I've been hanging out on bariatric boards for about five years, and I'd say the average weight loss for the first month (not first two weeks - first MONTH) is 15-25 lbs. I know you see people who drop 30 lbs the first month, but unless they're on "My 600 lb Life", they're an outlier. It's just not all that common, but most people seem to have that expectation.

I lost 16 lbs my first month, and I weighed almost 400 lbs. I've also lost 100% of my excess weight. Your body will lose at its own rate. The only control you really have is to stick to your program. So do that. Keep your nose to the grindstone and don't compare yourself to others.

I just read some studies that stated at the average first month loss is about 16-18% of excess weight. So...if you have to lose 100 pounds...you should lose about 16-18 pounds. If you have to lose 50...you should lose about 8-9.

On surgery day, I was 230 and I'm hoping to reach 170...so I had to lose 60. I lost 10, and will likely lose about 12 by my one month anniversary.....which seems to be in the ballpark of the study.

16-18% of your excess weight seems to be the answer bariatric surgeons will quote for first month's expected loss.

That said...people often report a stall at around week 3...which might be the body trying to conserve for repairs.

Push though your stall....add a little extra exercise, get your healthy calories in.... and I'll bet your scale will get moving again:)

Also...keep in mind that people are all different and every body works a little different. Do your best, keep steady, and eventually it all averages out.

I should mention that my group pushes for higher calories and more exercise sooner. I've been eating 1000 calories a day since the start of week 3 with no problems, and walking at least an hour or two every day.

Since weight loss is reported as a percentage, the number of pounds you shed per month depends on where you started. It also depends on the time since surgery. Findings in the October-December 2013 issue of the "Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons" suggested that people having sleeve gastrectomy lost more of their excess weight in the first few months after surgery. In this study of 100 patients, on average, subjects lost about 18 percent of their excess weight in the first month. Average weight loss by the end of 6 months was 50 percent of the excess body weight, and by the end of the first year, they had lost about 63 percent of their excess weight.

Factors Affecting Weight Loss

The amount of weight lost after gastric sleeve depends on several factors. An important factor is how well you follows your doctors' instructions about diet and exercise. Your preoperative weight also makes a difference, as people who start out at a lower weight tend to lose a higher percentage of excess weight than those who were heavier before surgery, according to the authors of a report published in the May 2012 issue of the "Journal of Obesity." Other factors such as age and gender may also affect your rate of weight loss.

it's going to depend on a number of factors - age, gender, starting weight, genetics, metabolism rate. Also, people who lose a lot of weight before surgery often don't have huge drops the first month. That is most likely because a lot of what people lose the first month of any weight loss program is Water, and if you lost a crap ton of weight before surgery, that water weight is long gone. Again, don't compare yourself to others. Your commitment to your program is what is going to determine your ultimate success - not your rate of weight loss. Some idiot medical resident at my clinic pointed out to me during my six month post-op appt that I was behind my co-hort (and I was...). I'd love to see the look on his face if he saw me now...

Anyways, about that weight lifting thing. I've been miserable. Because you know how they say you can't lift more than 10 pounds first week then 20 pounds second week.. Well

All i've been able to do is cardio and this sucks. Does that weight thingy apply to all weight lifting, and what about leg with weights? Ugh..

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
