Hey y'all!

I just had my pre-op appointment with my surgeon and I forgot to ask about the special soap we are supposed to use before surgery. I wasn't given any and she didn't mention it. Is this something I should call the office about or do not all surgeons require it? Thanks!❤️

I would call and ask. I was given a soap and I am supposed to start using it the last 3 days before surgery.

Mine hasn’t said anything either, my pre-op is Monday. Please keep us updated

Had my preoperative appointment yesterday. It's my hospital that gives out the preoperative soap not the bariatric surgeons. They give it out for all patients having surgery to reduce the risks of infection (and to save the hospital money as they lose a ton when patients get infected). I can't imagine too many bariatric surgeons office giving out the soap but who knows...

Hibiclens is the name of the product that my facility gives out, but basically any chlorhexadine wash will do. Bariatric surgery has a very low infection rate so it's not super important (if you were having a colon or joint surgery that's a different story). But it wouldn't kill you to try out

HI Lady83, through all my research I did discover that some hospitals would give patients the special soap, and some others do not. Because I know my surgeon does not, I went ahead and purchased it myself. I figured that I'd be well prepared on my end (and can't be a bad thing!) ? The one that seems to be used is the Hibiclens Antimicrobial Skin Liquid Soap. Which I bought on Amazon here : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EV18GE6/ref=od_aui_detailpages01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also in my research I came across a video from a hospital where they were describing to the patients the process of their surgery, including how to use the soap. I forget which video it was on YouTube but basically the doctor mentioned to use the soap in the shower for your entire body on the night before your surgery. Do not put any creams, powder or body lotions on after. Then the following morning (day of surgery), repeat same process in the shower but this time focus more on your abdomen area. Again when you come out of the shower do not put anything on your skin. It may possibly make your skin feel extremely dry (as said by another lady I found on YouTube who had used it) but you'll be super clean. The liquid soap keeps killing germs until 6 hours after using it.

Also note, your surgical group will wash you with the soap while you are under anesthesia. If you have hair they will also shave you (where they need to only).

No shaving at all 3 days prior to the surgery (legs, arm pits, anywhere else).

No deodorants (lotion was already mentioned) from the night before. Use freshly washed towels after each use of the soap you get/order, and sleep the night before on freshly washed sheets (including pillow case).

My Dr tells us to pick up a bottle at the pharmacy. They don't give it to you free.

I used mine the 2 nights prior to surgery and the morning of surgery.

I also used fresh towels and clothes after. I also put clean sheets on the bed.
I also packed/took a fresh blouse to wear home after surgery so that there were no germs from what I wore to the hospital since it was going to be against my tummy. I kinda cringe a little when I hear people are wearing the same thing home that they wore to the hospital. Normally I'm fine with re-wearing clothes 2 or 3 times especially if I've only work them for a couple hours. I even wore the same pants home but kept them tucked below my belly like a guy lol.

I even washed my robe before I packed it so that it was fresh too. I didn't want to take any chances with any germs.

When I left the hospital, my wounds were covered with bandages and under that, steri strips. There was no way wearing out what you wore in would cause an infection.

There also is no harm in bringing extra clothes like you did. But, I wouldn't want anyone to think it would be a problem.

Yeah I thought about that too but I was afraid to take any chances. My steri strips were all I had covering mine. No other outter bandages.

It is never wrong to be safe!!!

I ended up bringing so much I didn’t need. I am glad I brought my computer, I was doing work the next day (one of my systems went down at work).

My surgeon told me to use dial soap 1 day before surgery. Bbthen, as I was changing into my gown preop, I used towelettes from head to toe.

I was not given the soap either when I asked I was told they will wipe me down in the OR.

I wasn't given any soap. Dr. told me to wash as usual and they would wipe me down during the surgery.

I just had my pee-op appt today and my group suggested dial soap and to make sure it said antimicrobial or antibacterial on it. I am supposed to use it every day for 3 days prior to surgery and on the morning of surgery. They said to wash my entire body with it and extra wash my belly, then showed us where the incisions would be and said focus there. Mine said nothing about sleeping in fresh clean bedding but I sleep better that way so count me in lol!
I plan to bring my computer and study guides for school so I can do homework when/if I’m able. My family probably won’t be visiting very much so I will have plenty of walking and work/sleep time [emoji4]
