Eating is a chore

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 10 of my post-op liquid diet and "eating" has become a chore. It isn't that I crave anything...I'm just so sick of broth, yogurt, shake, jello....repeat. I don't enjoy any of it anymore...I tolerate it..barely. I'd rather not eat, but I know that's not an option. I am not allowed even thin purees for 11 more days. Ugh!

I really feel for you!! I am 4 years out from my RNY and for myself...eating most of the time is a chore!! I would rather drink everything. For so many years my life was food. Even when I got married to my bestie Food was what we did. Eating out was our entertainment!! Now that he had his Sleeve food isn't always on his mind either. We really have to be careful because we are both enablers!! And sweets are mine downfall and guess what he buys JUNK!!! I guess what I am trying to say, food more than likely won't be so important as you go on. The Preop and Postop do get boring. But it is a necessary to let us heal. Our bodies have gone thru major rearrangement. Good Luck

It's perfectly normal to feel like you do. Hang in there. Don't stress. Your goal is to try to develop good eating habits but that's a long term goal. Focus on staying hydrated. Sip sip sip. And get out of the house. Find somewhere you can walk. Park, museum, mall. Etc. find a hobby.

You've done an amazing thing for yourself. It's going to get better.

Well not chewing is boring. Thte first 6 months you never know if something is going to get stuck or hurt.

2 years out my relationship with food is pretty normalized. I enjoy it. I don't have issues with eating. I am not food obsessed but I still love food and I am a foodie.

It gets better. Hang in there.

Thanks everyone. I never thought I'd long for cottage cheese, which comes into my diet in 11 days! LOL. The hard part is I'm absolutely not hungry at all (strangest feeling in the world by the way) and everything I'm supposed to eat has no appeal...I'll survive...but it's challenging

This is where I'd like to get some day...able to enjoy food without being obsessed with it...actually wanting the healthy things that I know actually feel good in the body to eat...

I think that eating is a chore for most of us in the liquid stage. There is no enjoyment in it. It is rather boring. Once you are a post-op and past the liquid stage, it can get fun again. You get to start eating a more normal diet.

At 7 weeks out, it is just as much a chore as it was pre-op. The chore now is in spending an hour or more cooking just to eat next to nothing. Now, I get to make a meal that I used to just devour. I weigh my portion, and eat only that amount. I made a spinach, Tomato, red onion and avocado salad last night with taco seasoned veggie crumbles/black Beans on top. No dressing. I had 1 1/2 ounces of spinach, 1 ounce of tomato, red onion and avocado mixed up, and 1 1/2 ounces of the taco mixture. It was great. It was filling. It was a whole 1/2 cup of food. It was a lot of work for that 1/2 cup of food.

That is okay though. I made enough for about 10 meals. I portioned the taco mixture out, and froze it. Now I don't have to do that work anymore for a little while. Whenever I want it, I just have to thaw it out, and make a little salad to mix it with. I think that I have enough cooked food leftovers to last me almost a month and a half. That is good, because I just don't feel like cooking at times.

I think I must have saved at least $600 by not eating out the last 9 weeks! It is awesome! That surgery will pay for itself in no time!

Yes, this is true...but try making popsicles out of Premier Protein. I love making bomb pops with 1/2 bananas and cream and 1/2 chocolate. That way, you change up the texture, you change up the delivery system. And, you can make them the size that is perfect for you. Need a 2oz pop? No prob. Can handle a 3oz pop--cool! Also make protein popsicles out of Clear Protein Shakes. I love the frozen grapefruit and also lemon tea and fuzzy navel from Syntrax Nectar.

I will definitely keep this in mind. Great idea

Wish I could take credit for this bright idea. But the vets here do it and so I've experimented so that I know what to do when the time finally comes! :) They taste great. I especially love the grapefruit Syntrax Nectar and the bomb pops.

That's a really great idea! I haven't had any clear protein...what kind do you use? Is it really sweet?

I've experimented with a couple of different clear ones. When you freeze stuff it has a tendency to be less sweet--at least to me. Also, if the Premier Protein is too sweet for you, try buying some Peanut Butter Slim (Vitacost -- online) peanut butter powder and mixing it into the drinks. It doesn't have any added sugar unlike PB2 and really cuts the sweetness.

I've tried the Syntrax Nectar Protein Powder mixed with Water. You can dilute it as much as necessary. But the popsicles you might want to try with just the normal amount of Fluid first. The tendency is for it to settle so you have some dense flavor at the top and it gets more like an ice cube towards the bottom of the stick.

Syntrax Nectar: Grapefruit, Fuzzy Navel, Lemon Tea flavors are awesome.

Isopure Clear Protein: dilute 50/50 with water and add sugar free Koolaid water drops to them.

Alpine Punch--50/50 water to Protein, add a squirt of Grape Koolaid and a squirt of Tangerine water drops (sugar free).

Grape--50/50 water to protein, add 2 squirts of Grape Koolaid.

Green Tea--50/50 brewed flavored tea (I love Celestial Seasonings Mandarin Orange or also the Apple Spice) to protein. Adjust sweetness if necessary.

I understand your pain. It was like that in the beginning for me too. I'm just on the "soft food stage" and life has gotten so much better. Couple more weeks then I can finally eat normal foods.. i.e. chicken, beef etc.

Good luck :)

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
