No weight loss since one week postop

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I had RNY on August 22nd. I weighed in at 236 the morning of surgery. At my one week post op I was 228. It's been over THREE WEEKS since surgery and today I am weighing in at 227, a ONE pound loss in two weeks. I am beyond frustrated. I am getting in at least 64oz of Water a day. I am eating at least 75-80 grams of Protein and am eating anywhere between 500 and 700 calories a day, following to a T my doctors instructions for the soft food stage I am currently in. Last week I tried to go back to full liquids because I have seen some people find that helpful and I still isn't lost any weight. Not even a single pound. I am beginning to regret my decision to have the surgery. I had lost more weight in the 3 weeks no starch period before surgery than I have since having the surgery. Everything I read mentions stalls around 4-6 weeks, but I have been stalled since 1 week out.

Can anyone offer insight or support or at least tell me that there is hope for me?? Thank you all for listening...

I'm guessing that you're still retaining Fluid from the actual procedure. I held onto mine for a few weeks. Just remember that it's physically impossible (against physics) to eat that little and not lose weight eventually. It can take time, you're still filled with fluid and are swollen. It will happen!

Don't get discouraged everyone's body is different! You have to understand your body went through a traumatic experience so it sometime reacts by stalling out! Give it time and continue your meal plan as directed. Are you adding any exercise like walking around your yard, lifting canned goods, or just leg/arm lifts and circles?
I would be honored to help or atleast be of encouragement to you if you'd like that! Mentally it's great to have a partner that can provide a sound mind because we are our worst critics!!!

I hope so!! I did have to stay an additional night in the hospital because of persistent nausea so I got a ton of IV fluids. I was thinking the same thing about eating so little and having to lose weight somehow, I am praying that in a week or so I will get on that scale and see a 5 pound loss! Thanks for your encouragement!

I would absolutely love a partner to share my ups and downs with! Thank you so so much for offering. I don't really know anyone that has gone through this so it's tough to know what to expect outside of what the doctors told us during nutrition classes! Are we able to message over this app?

I am exercising 3-4 times a week, walking 2-3 miles as well as walking around the neighborhood on the days in between...

Praying to break the stall soon!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
