EGD before surgery date?

Recommended Posts

Today I finally got the call to schedule my EGD, four weeks after the call saying they were going to schedule it. Unfortunately, the date they scheduled it for is during my family vacation. I called them back this afternoon to see if they could do it the day before my vacation since I'll be off that day anyway, and I am worried about missing too much work. Of course, they said that they only do EGDs once a month. So now I am concerned I will have to wait until the end of October, and whether or not that affects them scheduling my surgery date. Did anyone get their date scheduled before the EGD? I'm am so frustrated at this point.

Do you live in a place where you could have the EGD done somewhere else? I had mine done at my regular clinic, because my surgery program is a 2 hour drive from me, and they just sent the results to my bariatric surgeon.

Oh yes, I live in a large city where I'm sure they're done by someone every single day. I called them and accepted to September 28 date to be safe. I go in for my final weigh in on Monday to submit to insurance so I'm hoping they will agree to give me a referral or do something. Otherwise I'm going to have try to move my vacation or will have to come home early. I can't believe they wouldn't refer me to someone rather than make me wait another month. I'm going to be sick about it all weekend, I wish they hadn't done this to me on a Friday.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
