I'm 4 days post from my gastric bypass and I'm having the hardest time with fluids. When they released me they said my upper GI test was clear. Now that I'm home when ever I drink Water or Protein juice/shakes it's leaves me in such discomfort. It feels like I swallowed rocks and they just sit on my chest. They make me feel like I'm so full even though I take the tiniest sips. I also don't know how much fluids I should consume in one day. So far I've been sipping a small amount of broth and the premier juice with protein cause the regular Protein Shake was so harsh on my stomach I was in tears. I could use all the advice I can get thank you in advance

My first question is mechanics: Though tiniest sips sounds good, pay attention to how much air you are swallowing. You are definitely experiencing more symptoms than I am but I didn't have anything until the very very end of day two and it was two bites of Jello (I had surgery a week ago).

My personal policy and my main recommendation is to call the surgeon/surgeon's office and say what's going on. I think they'll be the best ones to get answers from.

I would say definitely call your surgeon. My first week was extremely painful. I ended up being put on a prescription for stomach spasms and that helped. I only took it for about a week and then I was fine. Everyone's post-op diet is different. My surgeon wanted me to get 40oz of liquid in before starting on Protein and then 64oz of liquids and 50g of protein daily. The Protein Shakes were/are very harsh on my stomach and I had to stop drinking them. My surgeon recommended trying a shake using greek yogurt instead but even that doesn't sit well. So it's Isopure Protein Water drinks for me. I am 5 weeks out and so far the only food that I can eat (that I like) is applesauce, raw nuts, and Beans (refried beans or soups). I've tried fish and it sometimes goes down fine but it did hurt last week. I'm hoping it was just a fluke and maybe I ate too fast or didn't chew enough. I have tried chicken and turkey sausage but it's too heavy for me right now and hurts big time. So I'll wait a little longer. Call your surgeon about the pain though. Hopefully it's an easy fix.

So far Im on day 7 and my liquids are definitely going down a lot smoother and I can take bigger sips. My Premier Protein shakes are nothing giving me problems but after I drink one it definitely makes me have to go. My surgeon is saying I can eat soft foods on my 3rd week so I'm looking forward to it cause this liquid phase is getting old lol... thanks for your response and good luck on your journey

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
