? if BMI falls below 35 before surgery

Recommended Posts

Newbie here....currently my BMI is 36.8. I do not yet have a surgery date. I have been trying to follow my nutritionist's advice and have lost several pounds, but I am concerned that if I happen to get down below a BMI of 35, will insurance say I no longer qualify for sleeve surgery? Right now, my insurance will pay for the surgery because my BMI is above 35 and I have severe sleep apnea. I am so worried that if I drop another few pounds I won't qualify any more. Has anyone else had this issue?

Each insurance is different. The best thing is to directly ask your coordinator and insurance company directly.

I have fepblue and was told to not drop below 35, which shucked because I was 35.6. But there are plenty of others here who had no issues.

Best wishes!

My surgeon said that my qualifying weight submitted to the insurance will the one taken on the first day I saw her on 7.20.17. Hope that helps--but your insurance may be diff!!

I was approved through insurance already-they send your starting and current weight. Check with your insurance. I just didnt lose much on purpose but now that its approved and I will be on a two week liquid diet i can and will lose weight before the surgery.

Mine also said it is your starting weight that is submitted. I was told they just want to see if you will be successful following the plan. Most of us have lost and regained weight pre surgery. I think they know that's the pattern and for some sustained weight loss will only come with surgery.

Just check, each insurance is different.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
