I know this is a pretty weird topic but I just want to know if anyone can give me any knowledge. So I have to take my ring out of course for the surgery but I was told that retainers aren't meant to be worn for long periods of time. So does anyone know how many hours after surgery I should put the ring back in? Let me rephrase that, how many hours it will take before I am able to put the ring back in my nose?

I doubt they will let you put it back in, or even let you wear a retainer while you are an inpatient. It could be dangerous if they need immediate access to your airway.

I may be wrong, so don't my word as gospel. But, logically, I don't see them letting you wear the retainer. You can always re-pierce after if it closes. Is it that new that it would fully close up in 2-3 days? I would assume it may start to close, but nothing you couldn't re-open with one good painful push.

It seems like it would be that simple but it's really not. Re-piercing is like scar tissue and it's visible. I had this in for over 3 months or so now so it shouldn't close up but yeah.

Maybe they will let you wear the retainer if it has a large enough pad on to outside (big circle) with nothing to retain it in place on the inside of your nose.

You might be better not asking, and putting it in for a few hours each day (just make sure it can't push through (large pad). But if it can easily push into your nose, I wouldn't, it could become dangerous.

I haven't had the surgery yet, but I'm guessing you will be too preoccupied to worry about your nose piercing after the surgery.

I put mine back in when I got up for my first lap around the room. I don't think they really care about jewellery after you are done with surgery.

Nose piercing, or ear piercing?

I was able to use the clear plastic post during the surgery.

I could've put mine in right after surgery, but was feeling so ill I didn't until I got home- and had a hard time getting them back in ?

I put the retainer in morning of surgery and didn't put the ring back until I got home the next day. I had no issues. They did put a bit of tape over it when I went in for surgery as a just in case.

For your own sakes I highly recommend taking them out for the duration of the surgery. Honestly I think many hospitals would be willing to accommodate your desires, especially if youre stubborn. Buts it not a good idea to have anything in during surgery. At the very least I would take them out immediately before surgery, and put them back as soon as you are fully awake from the effects of anesthesia. Even plastic ones are a bad idea.

As far as timelines it will depend on your previous surgery and skill of your surgeon and how you react to anesthesia. But I think for your typical sleeve patient/surgeon youre talking about 5 hours (including surgery and wakeup time) without your ring in.

Hi QueenTiff,

The hospital I went to did not allow for jewelry or retainers during surgery. I have my belly button and tongue pierced. I took out my piercings about an hour before I went back to surgery and put them back in that night. They were out for about 12 hours and I was fine. However, I have had my piercings for about 15 years so that may make a difference.

I have a nipple piercing and this never occurred to me until this moment. Damn it's been 15 years since I got it and I have never taken it out. I do clean it daily when I shower. Damn I may just leave it out afterwards.
