Hi. I am 3.5 weeks out, and I have been having alot of problems eating and drinking. I was put on meats, cheese, soft veggies...pretty much anything since day 6. I think it was too early. I have been nauseaus and not wanting food (or drinks) I was taken off shakes (which I can't get down anyway) and yogurt. My question is, i know that we are supposed to eat yogurt with more Protein than sugar, but since I'm having so much trouble, would it hurt to eat one that has 13g sugar and 11g protein? Even if just until I can eat better?

I'd say if that's all you can tolerate its better than nothing. Try a few different kinds. The ones that I liked before surgery don't taste the same to me now. I did find I like the desert flavors like strawberry cheesecake but with teenage girls in the hose its hard to keep in the house. I bought vanilla Greek yogurt and its good and not too sweet and Greek yogurt is supposed to be higher in Protein. But I just went to the store and bought several different ones and tried them.

My rule of thumb with yogurt was a 1 to 1 ratio, Protein to carbs. So it sounds like yours is pretty good. The first month (to me) is about healing, not weight loss, so do what you need to. When you are on solid foods, it will be much easier to transition to higher protein/lower carb choices.

Protein is the most important thing right now next to Water. If the yogurt you listed is truly the only thing you can tolerate right now, then do it just to get some protein in. Just know you should transition to healthier option as soon as possible.

I've been on solid foods since 6 days post op. I haven't been doong well with food

In my opinion, 6 days is too soon. Docs all have their own plans, but mine did things slowly and it worked great for me. 3rd week everything was purees; like yogurt, split pea Soup, mashed potatoes and the like (for consistency).

Week one was Clear Liquids. Week 2 was full liquids.. So the purees opened up a new world ;)

One thing that you shouldn't overlook is the idea of taking things slowly, and don't hesitate to revert back to the easier foods. If yogurt is working, great! I found my tastes had changed so much that I could tolerate plain yogurt, no sweetener needed. YMMV

Every time I see this it seems crazy.

My doc has her patients do 2 weeks pre-op all liquid and a slow system for Post op

- Day 0-21 days post op all liquid diet

-Day 21 to 42 after surgery soft and mashable foods are added (scrambled eggs, tofu, flaky fish, soft low fat cheese, soft veggies),

THEN 42 to day 63 post-op adding chicken, pork, raw veggies

Finally day 63+ is adding red meat.

Try Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt. 15 g Protein and 0 carbs and sugar. I, personally, like the coconut creme and orange creme. The Peach is tasty, too.

EVERY person I have spoken to has said the same thing, that it was too soon. I think I am going to go back to the things that were easier for me to eat. How will I know when to try again?

I love oikos triple zero but just to clarify it has zero grams ADDED sugar. The natural milk sugar (lactose) ranges from 6-8g depending on the flavor.

That's crazy! I'm 8 days post op, and I couldn't imagine eating anything solid. I'm just able to tolerate liquids. Nothing solid until week 3 for us.

This is a bit difficult, since I followed my plan (so the plan told me what to add and when).

Basically, try and keep to one type of consistency for a week at a time, and by time you are 8-9 weeks out, you'll add in everything.

So, starting today, make sure everything is a runny puree consistency. Smooth, thin, will run off a spoon. Add liquid if things are too thick. (You can do tuna or beef in the blender if you want.. puree is about the texture, rather than what you are eating.)

At 4 weeks, you move to thick and smooth. Like greek yogurt. Will stand up on a spoon, but still no chunks.

At 5 weeks, you move to soft chunks (like unblended split pea soup). You'll need to chew a bit, but everything should turn to mush in your mouth.

At 6-8 weeks, you move gradually into firmer and firmer foods. Raw veggies are one of the last things you add.. especially raw carrots, cucumbers with peels, etc. It might take longer than 8 weeks to bring some of that back in.

I knew it was ok to advance to the next stage when I could eat the current stage relatively quickly and without discomfort. Anytime you try out a new food, just take a small bite, chew it well, swallow, and wait to see if everything is ok, before taking the next bite. Your tummy will tell you when it doesn't like things.

If you overdo, and end up vomiting, go back to liquids for a day to rest your tummy. Wait at least a week before reintroducing something that didn't agree with you.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
