How soon is too soon for a road trip?

Recommended Posts

3 days after my surgery date my husband & I need to take the kids to their week long summer camp 3 hr. Away. My husband can do the trip on his own, but things run smoother when moms are around. But is a 6 hr. round Road trip to much just 3 days out? IMG_0076.JPG

I hasd a laparoscopic hysterectomy a few years back, and 3 weeks later decided to make a 3 1/2 hour trip with my husband to a work conference. I figured it would be nice to relax by the pool. Big mistake! Even on smooth roads at interstate speed, the vibrations really did a number on my insides, and I was in a lot of pain for over 24 hours.

I would stay home that close to surgery. As long as your husband can do it

My surgery is this Monday October 16 and the hospital is 7 hrs from my home. The mayo Clinic Dr told me no driving for at least 3 weeks and on trip home (son driving me) get out and walk for 15 to 20 minutes every hour because of blood clots. He said to take his advice very seriously

My surgeon instructed me NO TRAVEL for 30 days - and repeated this multiple times. I live in a large city, so I'm not sure how far that restriction extends. My niece is hosting Thanksgiving at her house and lives one hour away. I'll see him before that time and ask. I went to the grocery store to get in my walking this past week - it wasn't far from the house and I thought if I have an issue, I'd be in a public place. I like to take Sunday drives, so this is a change. I am erring on the side of caution here. I don't want to set anything back on my recovery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
