Date before insurance approval

Recommended Posts

Has anyone got a surgery date before insurance approval? If so, does that mean the doctors office are pretty confident that you will be approved? Has it happened to anyone and then obstacles came your way?

I was given a surgery date (March 8th!) during my initial consultation with the surgeon. In the case of my surgeon's office, I believe they have good relationships with several insurance companies and are pretty confident that you will be approved. My surgeon's support staff was very helpful and outlined exactly what I needed to do and the deadlines to give them all the required paperwork. After that they submitted everything to insurance and notified me when I was approved (which was on Tuesday!). Of course this is not an absolute because I have read on this forum that some people's surgery dates have been cancelled when insurance was not approved. I would ask your doctors office if they anticipate any issues/obstacles with approval.

On the other hand, the surgeon that I visited before I chose my current surgeon did not give surgery dates prior to insurance approval. They explicitly said it was because they had dealt with several insurance denials in the past and wanted to be absolutely sure before scheduling dates.

I know someone who got a date before insurance approval. I think it really just depends on the surgeon.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
