As long as the thyroid hormone levels are well-controlled with medication, an underactive thyroid is no reason not to get banded. If it's newly diagnosed or is not responding to hormone treatment, the doctors will want to get a handle on it before proceeding with surgery.

Another question, as I'm thinking about it. Will this surgery help with the possibility of maybe getting off of thyroid medicine - as it can help HBP or Diabetes patients?

Probably not--thyroid function is not influenced by diet. I doubt there will even be a change in her med level.

I have ZERO thyroid function, so for me the thyroid supplement is really thyroid replacement, plus I am insulin resistant (pre-diabetic). Makes for a terrible metabolic rate, so it's really hard for me to lose weight. Good thing I'm so active...:biggrin1::biggrin1:

Ok, thanks lessnless.

I didn't think so, but it's nice to hear how it is from someone who is going through it. :)

Wishing you much success!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
