Hashimotos and need to lose 60 lbs

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am new to this forum and hoping to get some opinions from all of you. I am 44 years old and have an autoimmune thyroid disease called Hashimotos thyroiditis. I have a very hard time losing weight I can't seem to get under 200 lbs no matter what. I usually follow an autoimmune protocol diet which is very strict due to my disease. No diary, Beans, nuts, seeds, nightshades, grains, gluten processed foods of any kind. The list goes on! This is because my immune system is eating my thyroid and I have a host of other issues stemming from this disease including inflammation. I am seriously considering banding because I have grown tired of the weight loss failure. I currently weigh 217 lbs and would like to get to a healthy weight which would be about 155 or 160. My Bmi is 33.8 and everyone tries to say I am not heavy enough. But I hold my weight well under clothes lol. I am too heavy! And my joints are screaming and I am plain uncomfortable. I just want to feel healthy again. I have not been under 200 lbs since before my kids were born my oldest is 22 almost 23 and I have 2 grand babies! I just want to know what you all think.

Thanks!

Heather

Hello Heather,
I had my thyroid removed and VSG 2 months later. I've lost 60 lbs but medication issues still affect weight loss.
I am confident that I never could have lost the weight without having my thyroid removed.
I could eat nothing (and pretty much did)lol but no weight would come off.
Once I had the surgery I couldn't believe I could eat and not gain weight.
There's so much more to obesity than calories and exercise.
Good luck managing your Hashi's
I know it's tough.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
