Port pain after Ab excercises?

Recommended Posts

I have been banded 4 months and recently started working out with a personal trainer. Once a week we do abs for almost an entire work out. I dont have any pain while I am doing the actual excercises but the next day the pain around my port is especially irritating.

Am I doing too much? Will this harm my port? Does this go away?

I dont want to stop doing the excercises for my abs because I really am noticing a difference but at the same time I dont want to set myself up for a flipped port or something goofy.

I asked my surgeon whether or not it was ok to start doing intensive ab work and she ok'd it. But if you are having pain I'd let her know about, even if it turns out to be nothing.

I was told no ab crunches or sit-ups. I can do leg lifts. I would talk to your doctor before continuing with the ab exercises.

Bottom line, if it hurts don't do it!!!! There is a difference between good pain (muscles building) and bad pain around the port. I was banded July 15, 2006, and still sometimes have issues with my port when I am doing ab workouts, especially crunches. If you are really short waisted (which I am) this can also cause pain. I literally felt like that my port was getting stuck in my ribs. It still happens from time to time but you learn to work around the issue. Talk to your doc....and listen to your body.

I was told I could do any exercises I wanted to....the "port" would let me know if I need to slow down! And it does! It still gets sore if I've really concentrated on abs but I can understand that! It hasn't stopped me from doing exercises though!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
