Here's a silly question

Recommended Posts

I'm aware I'm a low-ish weigh for surgery - BMW 39.5 235lbs and 5 4 small...

I've been told not to do preop diet just kill carbs in last week and take vits but had devised my own programme ahead of Dec 17th surgery to 'lose' bad foods in two week blocks. Have lost 4lbs in two weeks having cut sweets and chocolate but now thinking - and here's the silly question...

Say I lost 20lbs in four weeks by dropping carbs replacing meals, and bmi was down to 36 or 37.. or if it went to 35 would they still operate? I know I wouldn't sustain that without the op and would yo-yo back. I intend to use the 6-18 month period of 'can't eat' to change mindset to who would want to eat, whatever.

But obvs couldn't do this without op.

Maybe I just like to worry!!!!

I had exactly the same question! They take your very first weight - the first time they see you

Any pre-op weight loss is irrelevant to your BMI when they evaluated you.

I was basically the same start weight as you I had to do the two week pre opp diet however and my pre surgery weight was 103kgs so 206lbs I was self pay and they were happy to operate on me

There may be rules around insurance pre surgery weight etc if your self pay also I wouldn't worry.

I was at 44 BMI at the first visit, but 38 BMI on surgery day. It didn't matter in the least. It's all about maintaining weight loss

I started at 211 lb and am 5"2'. I did the liver shrink pre-op diet for 2 weeks and lost 11 lb. Mine consisted of 4 slimfast 20 Gm high Protein, low carb (1gm sugar) shakes, 6 oz lean Protein daily, salad for lunch with 2 tbsp low fat dressing (only low carb veggies), and low carb veggies with evening meal. Was very doable, never got hungry and was so glad I got a jump start on my weight loss!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
