I had Gerd before getting surgery. I don't know if there is anything you can do to prevent it but I take omeprazole every day and don't have any issue with the heartburn.

I had it before surgery also. When I discussed which surgery to have, I could swear my dr told me that it would cure Gerd, but not right away. I'm one week post-op and I don't believe her. I'll know more tomorrow and will be happy to share what she has to say.

Not everyone gets gerd but if you already have issues with heartburn or reflux it can make it worse.

I haven't experienced any acid issues yet, but I'm only 3 months out.

This site estimates that gerd will impact 45% of vsg patients, but I'm not sure if that included people who already had it.

http://www.obesitycoverage.com/uncomplicating-gastric-sleeve-complications/

I've seen estimates that 20% of adults have gerd.

Does everyone get gerd? Is there a known cause to this? Can the patient do anything to prevent it aside from medication and food avoidance?

Will you always have gerd going forward?

I have had gerd for years, with a chronic cough. I was gonna have the sleeve, but was concerned a out gerd afterward. When i had my consult with the surgeon I mention this concern. Here is what he,said, " about 1/3 of sleeve patients, still will have gerd, however what,I have been seeing is 3 to 4 years out many people have, severe hardburn and end up converting to Rny." I'm not willi g to chance that, so even with my lower BMI, I'm going the RNY route. Hope that helps.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
