1st day of PRE OP diet ~ a couple questions...

Recommended Posts

First day of pre op and of course I'm really hungry and feeling completely unmotivated to do anything.

All Clear liquids and broth never tasted so good.

I'm visiting family down south next week for four days. My nutritionist said I could have one meal each day while there. The other nutritionist wasn't fond of his suggestion but said ok but "just NO carbs, lean meats..."

I was wondering if anyone else ate any meals right in the middle of their pre up? And if so, what were your choices ?

Surgery date is 11/17 and vacation is 11/10-11/13

Any tips or suggestions or advice. Thank you!!

You have two nutritionists? That seems odd to me. IMO, nutritionists are like watches: When you have one, you know what to eat and what time it is. When you have two, you'll get differing opinions. Four solid meals during your pre-op diet shouldn't derail everything. Good luck to you!

Yes there are two nutritionists in my doctors office. Both great and agree 99% of the time. Lol. One even holds a post surgery cooking /support class.

With that said.... my pre op menu is nothing but Water, G2, certain shakes, Decaf tea or decaf coffee, no milk. sugar free Jello and popsicles and any kind of broth. Other than these two weeks prior, there was nothing like this.

Four meals during pre op but make them lean ...?

I am pre op and allowed one meal a day and 2 shakes. I am on day 2.

I have eaten chicken breasts. Then I take green Beans, broccoli and spinach and sauté with only fresh lemon, garlic and pepper.

I don't know what to do for the next 4 days though. I can't eat this everyday.

I am lucky to be able to eat a meal

I give those of you that are on all liquids high praise!! You are very strong people to do that!

I have a fundraiser spaghetti dinner this weekend. What will I do? This limits everything I do. I just want to go to bed and wake up on surgery day!

It's soooooo hard. Just one meal a day would take that edge off. But pre op liquids only is terrible !!! Having to go thru the grocery store where all the fresh items were cooking just so I could get G2 and broth was tough. I caved and had a cup of egg drop Soup and of that I ate mostly just the broth so not sure if I'd consider that a "cave"

As far as the spaghetti dinner ~~~ you'll be almost half way in ~~ eat before and if you want, just eat salad there (bring your own dressing)

That's going to be hard but the only other option is "to not go" and that's not cool. You can't miss it.

I had a two week pre-op diet. First week was three meals a day consisting of two meals 3-5 oz of lean meat and a cup of vegetables. Third meal was a Protein shake. sugar free Jello and Clear Liquids in between.

Second week was only Protein shakes and clear liquids. Important to do to shrink the liver for surgery as well as to start building the discipline and consistency in practicing what is necessary to be successful.

For your trip, I would follow your nutritionist to the letter, especially since it's so close to your surgery. If you need to have a meal, stick with one meal, no more than 3-5 oz of lean meats and no more veggies.

Good luck!

So my doc only requires 3 days liquid before surgery. I think there is a whole lot of grey area here. Do the best you can and stick to it but don't drive yourself crazy thinking it will ruin things.

"A whole lot of grey area" to say the least !!

At first I was wondering if it were BMI related. I'm at a 38 BMI. wow, I don't think I've ever said that out loud.

Today is day 2. I will do my absolute best next week in the south (of all places) the land of delicious fried food. Lol

I could keep away from fried food and fatty foods.

Why no veggies tho ?

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
