Clothing - what to do

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone - I am now to the point where my clothes are all too big. I have a very expensive wardrobe, well to me its expensive. Most of my clothes came from Torrid and I love them, most are new with tags. I was thinking of altering them, I know a little about sewing, but not sure if I should waste the time. Have any of you contemplated this idea? I don't want to shop for new clothes until I reach maintenance, and I am 65-75 pounds away.

Thanks for any comments or pins that may help.

I've heard alterations can get expensive. Maybe pick a few of your favorites to alter? You could consign your wardrobe potentially, I know torrid has some nice stuff. I was suggested re-sale like consignment, goodwill or Salvation Army for in-between sizes until you reach your goal and go for a brand new wardrobe. Good Luck!

If there are still tags on the clothes you might want to ask the store about their policies and see if it would be possible for you to exchange them for a smaller size.

There are online stores like Depop where you can sell clothes, so that might be an option worth checking out.

I HATE shopping for clothes!

I've altered a few of my favorite tops and pants..mostly the easy ones that I could see where to take them in at. My palazzo pants were the easiest to alter...just replaced the elastic with a tighter one!

Other than that, i'm getting rid of things on yardsale sights on Facebook and using the Letgo app for selling clothes that I can't take in

I altered my clothes after surgery. I did buy a few pieces just so I didn't look like I was walking in a bag. I purchased everything i wanted when I passed my goal weight.

Look for a Facebook group called Torrid Addicts. Lots of folks selling and buying clothes there all the time.

As for bras.....that's gonna be a nightmare for me. I might just have to sports bra it for a few month til I settle somewhere. I've already gone from a 46ddd to 44ddd in the first 3 months of my 6 month diet....

I saved my really fancy and expensive ones for maternity and gave away the rest. I was told to save them in case I end up being that size again and that was reason enough for me to get rid of them. If you can sew then I don't see why you should have yourself a little party and work on getting some fixed..

I have Lots of cloths. Way more than any one person needs. And in a wide oray of sizes too.

Right before I had surgery (just 10 days ago!) I emptied the closet and during mms ped out the storage boxes and after a merciless purge organized them by size and put the ones that fit in the closet and packed the rest by size and season then put them in labeled boxes.

My plan is to consign/sell/toss everything as soon as it outgrows me.

I gave several bags to "dress for success" it's tax deductable and have over already made $400. on sales and consignment, though half of that was just for a few purses.

Getting everything ready for resale was lots of work. I think that in the future I will avoid it by buying less though I am looking forward to buying non plus size lingerie. Lots and lots of it.

I would pick your favorites and reach out to a local seamstress and see if they might make you a package deal. When we got married last Halloween my mom my sister and I had to have our costumes slash wedding dress altered kind of last minute. I went to a local seamstress and she gave us really good deal for all three pieces. Only cost me $30 to take in like five inches of my wedding dress, which was a custom-made 1940's pattern dress.

It might cost you a hundred bucks or so for 5-10 items but it likely cost you a lot more than that if its torrid and other similar brands.

You could also try selling on your local Facebook pages. I see a lot of women selling clothes like that in my area. The online resale stores don't give you a whole lot of money and where I am the consignment stores don't either.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
