Citric Acid A No-No?

Recommended Posts

I was banded a week ago (wow, time flies). My doc told me to stay away from any drinks with citric acid since the acid irritates the stomach. At the time, I said no problem. But I didn't realize just how many drinks have citric acid in them - most notably, my absolute favorite, Crystal Light. Has anyone else had their doc tell them to steer clear of citric acid? If so, what do you drink? I do drink Water, but sometimes I need something with some flavor! Also, if your doc has told you to avoid citric acid, did he mean just during the healing phase, or forever? No Crystal Light forever??!! I don't even want to think about that!

Yeah I have heard that about fruit drinks...it can cause distress. I didn't have a problem. I think it is an individual thing.

Hey, I can answer this for ya NO problem. I specifically asked my dietitian(sp?) about this because i too looked at my crystal light packages and saw that it had citric acid. They told me, no PURE citric acid stuff, like Orange juice, Grape fruit juice....Oranges, Grapefruit....Lemons, Limes....Stuff like that for at least 6 months after surgery, after that, its fine. They told me that the citric acid found in crystal light, is not the same kind, and will not harm you at all, and in addition there isnt enough in the crystal light to do anything. Its citric acid in pure form such as orange juice, oranges etc.....If you are a orange juice lover, try the orange sunrise crystal light, tastes just like orange juice, and its safe!! Hope this helps clear everything up for ya, dont worry drink all the crystal light you wish!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
