Starting my bariatric journey- choosing the right surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm jay. I'm just starting my wls journey. I've interviewed several amazing doctors in my area. But i'm still struggling to decide what surgery option is best for me. I'm torn between the sleeve and gastric bypass. One dr. Recommended the sleeve for me, and another recommended the bypass.

So with that said i wanted to hear from everyone. How did you decide which surgery was best for you?

If you're already post op what side effects did you have, if any?

I just want to know exactly what to expect.

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this and answer any of my questions. Best of luck to all of you on your journey.

I think you need to find a surgeon you trust and trust HIS advice. We are not experts on medical advice at all. That being said the reason my husband waited fifteen years for WL surgery, the sleeve, is because it is less invasive and scary. Good luck!!! He is down 100 lbs and happy, three years out.

I'm in the same boat as you. My surgeon seems to lean on bypass for all his patients beachside you lose weight quicker supposedly but I'm comfortable with the sleeve because it's less invasive.

@@Smdnght28 i went to a wls seminar and they said that in the end you losr the same amount of weight with both procedures. They said that some people with bypass start to regain some of the weight and some people with the sleeve continue to lose weight so it balances out.

( i hope that helps)

For me at least, i'm terrified of dumping syndrome so i'm not sure about bypass.

Do you know when you're going to have your surgery yet? I say trust your gut, if you think the sleeve is better for you, do some more research and consider that.

The key for me wad less invasive, I already have other medical devices implants and didn't want the band. My surgery date is Oct 19 and I can't wait. What ever you decide best of luck.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
