Pain question

Recommended Posts

Hi all - please help. I had my bypass this morning and I have terrible spasiming like pain when I breathe in on my left side. I'm assuming it's trapped gas?

I can't seem to release it. Any ideas? Nurses keep giving me pain relief meds in iv but it's not helping.

I can't sleep it's so painful

Glad you are in the hospital. When in doubt call the doctor if the nurses won't, if you are extremely bad off and think something is wrong.

Walk as much as you can, I remember feeling the exact same way. Walking, for the next 3-4 days as much as you can will relieve the pain so long as you aren't having any other complications. Recovery is painful but every day gets better

Yes, the first 2 days are the worst but it does take several days for it all to release. I was also shocked at how painful it was, but it's normal and it will go away if you walk. At the hospital I tried to walk once an hour down the corridor and back. Once home I made sure to get up every 30 minutes.

Hope you're feeling a little better. It will go away- I promise! Everyone was right. Walk. Walk. And then walk some more! When you get home, too. It's nice out, so out the front door, down a few houses and back every 2 hours. Each time, try to go one more house. By 5 days post op I was going around the block. And haven't stopped! I feel like Forrest Gump! Seriously!. Each day I go out, I just think "I'm going to get to ..." And I do! Couple weekends ago I walked 13 miles- and then back!!!- because my car was where I started. At any point I knew I could grab a cab, Ubër or bus if I needed, but i just "Gump'd" away!

Keep up posted.

And don't stop sipping liquids!!!

The key is to walk, walk, walk.

I had my sleeve on 9/14 and I've been walking as much as possible. The cramps are no joke and you've got to move around to get that gas reabsorbed into your tissue and dispelled. I've had no problems with stairs - my bedroom is on the second story of my house and it's not an issue.

This morning I noticed a marked difference in the pain levels. I almost feel normal already and I'm sure that as soon as this Colace (and this double-shot latte I pulled and have been sipping on for the last hour) does its job, I'll be in a great deal less pain/discomfort!

Walk some every hour. My first day was much worse than I was prepared for. The nurse told me to lay on my side. Getting on my side was tough. Use the bed rail and breath. It helped a lot. Then since most of the gas was in the left side of my back, someone rolled up a blanket and wedged it under my left side. I stayed angled like that and it helped. Within about y hours I forced myself to walk every hour laps, took a rest for Half hour and started again for a few hours till 1 a.m. did steps 2x on first day and at least once a day since. Its tender going up but fine down and also helps with gas. Good luck

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
