How much weightlifting post op?

Recommended Posts

Hello, First I want to say how wonderful it is this forum exist. I am 49 years old and have been fighting weight loss all my life as most of have. I am currently 5'11 395. The story is too long but i am just beginning to look at gastric sleeve with my first appointment next week.

I currently weight lift every other day for 1 1/2 hours. I lift heavy but still do a lot reps except for my max. My max bench is 415 and I am not saying this to brag because I do not have much to brag about just to indicating the level of lifting that i am doing. I do chest press with dumbbells, biceps curls, triceps pulls, leg press and few more exercise pushed on whoever happens to be at the gym. I lack in cardio because of the edema in my legs and my asthma has gotten worse because of my weight.

What I am wondering is there anyone who was lifting heavy weights before they started their journey and was still able to continue after surgery? I hope that I will be able to add cardio into my workout as well as to continue lifting and my actual see some results for once in my life.

Thank you and I look forward to documenting my progress and getting inspiration from yours.

Nothing is going to stop you from lifting post op but you need to wait until you heal.

Surgery cuts through your abdominal muscles and you need to let them fully heal or risk a hernia.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
