DID WLS LEAD TO A CAREER CHANGE FOR ANYONE?

Recommended Posts

Did wls lead to a change in career? i ask because with all that i went through to get insurance approval, and the constant changes in diet, and even just being on this site i realize that so many people are uninformed when it come to diet and nutrition. I'm seriously considering going back to school to be a Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian in either SC or GA. did anyone else go into a field that is Bariatric related or just changed career paths in general as a result of wls?

I think the thing that is driving me to this is how much of a struggle it is for some after surgery. And how i want to be a success story and when i do i want to be able to help others do so as well

What you're thinking of doing sounds stupendous. RD's can do a lot of good and I think that most of us who've had surgery would agree that too few RD's working in bariatric practices understand much about our total experience.

I will suggest that, if you do go ahead with this career change, you pursue RD status. Anyone can claim to be a "nutritionist." There are absolutely no requirements to use that title and hang out a shingle. While some people do study before hanging their shingles, but not enough to become a licensed RD, The proper Master's degree (and whatever else is required) that leads to RD status will open far more doors for you.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
