Some foods have strange tastes and smells

Recommended Posts

Does anyone notice that some foods don't smell like they used to? And some food tastes BAD. Avocado is one food that tastes and smells weird for me. Even some perfumes I used to wear smell different now.

Anyone have the same thing happen to them and if so, does it go away?

Thanks

Surgery can definitely affect your sense of taste or smell. After my surgery, even Water in the hospital was undrinkable, because it had the taste of being heavily chlorinated.

It does change over time (but not completely back to pre surgery levels). I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. I found that mixing food groups together (such as in chili and soups) put flavor back in the meals. Spices can help a lot.

It's normal. It does get better. I couldn't eat yogurt or anything sweet for two weeks because it all tasted absolutely disgusting. It's better now.

I also had a super nose immediately after surgery. I could smell -everything-, and it grossed me out. It's not as bad now (a month out), but my sense of smell is still much stronger than it was before.

my sense of taste became more intense after I had surgery (sweet things tasted sweeter, spicy things tasted spicier). I don't notice it anymore at 14 months out, though. I'm not sure if it's returned to normal or if I've just gotten used to it at this point...

My sense of smell was extremely heightened for about 4 weeks after surgery and most made me nauseous. I compared it to first being pregnant. All returned to normal after about a month, but my tastes changed from before surgery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
