Concerned about back pain 11 days post op

Recommended Posts

I am 11 days post op. I had my follow up with surgeon yesterday and am down 16 pounds since the Tuesday before surgery. Yeah! I was doing really good with minimal pain (stopped pain meds4 days out of surgery). I have no issues with the liquid diet.

Today woke up with an incredible stabbing pain in the middle off my back on the left side. The stabbing pain occurs whenever I inhale. Plus I am extremely tired. Any one else out there experience this? What could it be?

Called the surgeons office and they are closed today except for the receptionist. She recommended I cAll my primary care doctor. Have an appointment later today, just concerned on what this could be.

Any advice?

Carrie

I'd be concerned about a blood clot. Isn't there a surgeon on-call?

@@csalt I don't mean to scare you but the risk of blood clots with this surgery is too high to take any chances with pain like you describe.

Went to my dr and it is a kidney infection. Now on antibiotics. I also Hassan the concern of blood clots! Glad it was this instead!

Another update - I ended up in the ER today as the pain got worse. I got a cat scan and it ended up that a part of my spleen was damaged during surgery. That part is dying off and the cause of the stabbing pain. Good news is no surgery needed just time to let it heal. Now on oxicodeine for the next few days. This pain is worse than after surgery!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
