Billed $480 for consultation. Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hello my fellow sleevers,

So I saw a surgeon in January who I was authorized to see through my primary doctor. He was in my network and I only paid a $15 Co pay on the day of the consultation. Come June, I got a bill in the mail for $480 minus the $246 payed by my insurance. My question is, is this kind of charge normal for just a regular consultation with an authorized surgeon???? No one can tell me why the bill was soo much that my insurance couldn't cover it.

I had to pay a $250 fee for all the paperwork they file, and I think my normal co-pay.

It made sense to me from a business stand point because even if people are denied coverage from their insurance, they still have to spend all the time to get the paperwork together in the proper format and submit.

When you call the 800 number for your insurance, no one will explain the charges? And no one at the Dr office will either?

No, I tried calling the billing department of the surgeon. At first, they told me that my insurance billed me that much. Now they are saying that my medical group did but both are pointing their fingers at the surgeon. I don't know how to resolve this <_<

Turn them all into the state insurance regulators, and see what happens. I would give them once more chance then say that is what you are going to have to do.

Edited to add:

It is possible you are still meeting your out of pocket and deductible?

I didn't know that you could do that. I'll look into if nothing progresses. Thank you!

That's really strange. Consults are normally free. You shouldn't have to pay because that's when you ask your questions and see if you even qualify for the surgery. I didn't even have to pay a co pay. However if you do have to end up paying and you have a deductible. That money will go towards it. Atleast that's how it is with Highmark Bluecross/Blueshield.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
