Post-op diet- will a scoop of icecream in protein drinks hurt band?

Recommended Posts

I am doing really well 4 days post-op. Walking is a huge help, not to mention the pain meds, but I don't like the taste of any of the shakes. Will I damage my band by putting a scoop of ice cream in with the Protein Shake? One scoop of coffee ice cream in a Carnation Instant Breakfast shake makes it taste so much better and I can get the Protein I need.

Help!

Amy

Smooth ice cream and frozen yogurt are indeed full liquids. If you're progressed on to that portion of the postop diet (and off clear liquids), this is not a problem at all. You may get more calories than you want, of course, so don't be surprised if you don't lose as quickly as those who don't add calories this way, but it's all good.

Alexandra, would you mind telling me what an "AP" band is? I tried looking up this term, but could not find it. THANK YOU!

ps: I admire the fact that you were re-banded after a slippage.

I wasn't a big shake fan either - but i did it cuz that's what i was told to do. I just kept working on them till i found one i liked

That scoop of ice cream has alot of calories - try sf ice cream or I think dannon lite makes a coffee chocolate yogurt... only 60 calories..

Good luck the 1st week is the hardest - it gets better day by day.

AP is the newest kind of band, recently released by Allergan. I think it stands for Advanced Platform or something. Pretty soon all doctors will be using it; it's not that I'm so special or something. (In fact, I think I'll take that out of my signature, since it's not really anything I had a choice about.)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
