Cheated on Pre-op diet 5 days before surgery.

Recommended Posts

I had a chicken salad on Thursday and I have my sleeve surgery on Monday. I'm afraid that I will have salad left in my stomach. Any suggestions or comments to help? I'm on a 800 calorie diet with pre-made food (Soup, Protein bars, smoothies, etc) plus 64 oz of non-calorie fluids. My starting weight was 245. All the blogs I've seen most people have to diet with a liquid diet for two weeks. Not sure why I've been allowed to eat prior to surgery.

Your sandwich won't be left in your stomach. It takes food about 24 hours to move through your entire digestive tract and out the other end. Your chicken salad sandwich is very likely completely long gone.

Many surgeons don't require a liquid diet. Mine didn't (hey -- since our surgeons are in the same practice, not surprising). One chicken salad sandwich is not going to derail you. Just stick to your diet from now on and you'll be fine.

You should trust Dr. Boyce. He is a rock star and the New Life center is a Center of Excellence. The RD's are the best! Don't start second-guessing their instructions based on what you read on blogs from internet strangers. Trust them and follow their plans. You will do awesome. I have lost 220+ pounds following their instructions, with zero complications or problems. You are in the very best of hands, I promise.

I would think that if you're allowed to have chicken Soup, then chicken salad wouldn't be a far stretch ---especially since your surgery isn't until Monday.

However, if you're going to stress over it and not get any rest before surgery, just call you bariatric team and ask. They will reassure you.

Now, take a deep breath.

Relax.

Worry about something else. :) You know you will. :)

Post as you feel comfortable after your Monday surgery and let us know how you're doing.

We are nosy AND we care!

Good luck and from what I hear, you'll be in excellent hands.

Starting to scooch over to make room for you on, "The Losers' Bench".

Prayers going up for a joyful journey for you.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
