2 months post-op constipated

Recommended Posts

Ok, this is totally TMI but I need help.

I had surgery on 3/19, and up to 10 days ago I was doing fine.

I lost over 50 lbs and I feel great most of the time.

I can eat almost everything by now (of course, no sugar, no fat, no carbonated drinks and no alcohol) but the past few days I've been really constipated.

I never had problems like this before, on the contrary, if you know what I mean.

I eat plenty of fruit (i admit I've been a little lazy with vegetables, eating only once a day), and every time I have to go is a struggle. I go days without having to go.

Can anyone help?

Mix some Miralax into juice or Water every morning, and take a stool softener every night. This will keep you regular and make sure you avoid a bigger problem, which could lead to an ER visit! I KNOW what I'm talking about! Drink as much water as you can. Stop all narcotics, if you are still taking them for pain. And get up and move around every chance you get!

Benefiber- is tasteless!

If you eat bacon - try having an egg and a strip of bacon - always works for me!

Best of luck!

I am using dulcolax stool softener every day, a MOM pill every day and benefiber twice a day. this has helped me as I have had a few (5) impactions since surgery. NOT FUN.

however, my team is wanting me to not stay on the MOM (milk of magnesia) so if I am still needing all of this at my 6 month check up they will refer me to a GI specialist because I was told there are prescriptions that would be better for me in the long run.

I had the runs for the whole year I was on metformin, so this has been quite a change.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
