VSG 5 year or more vets

Recommended Posts

This morning I was watching My 600lb life and DR. N said to Pauline after 5 years the effects of the surgery wears away. Pauline had gastric bypass so I'm not sure if this would be specific to only that WLS or was he just giving her a wake up call or if it's a fact.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Exactly what "effects" wear away? For bypass, your intestines are still rerouted and your stomach is still a small pouch. Sure, you can stretch the pouch if you aren't eating correctly, but there is still malabsorption. As for a sleeve, you don't grow back your fundus so your stomach will still be much smaller than an unaltered stomach 5, 10, or 20 years later. Your restriction will be less than immediately postop, but you will never ever have the same capacity as preop.

"Exactly what effects wear away" was a questions I was hoping one of the vets on here could answer. I figured I'd throw it out there and see if anyone could provide more insight

I suspect he was trying to scare her. I have friends 5+ years out from bypass some have done well some not but if they did not do well they are eating around it. For the others they use their tool and it still works

Scaring her was my first thought... I'm pre-op, wouldn't change my mind about having surgery but I like to gather as much info as possible. Important to be an educated patient.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
