Three months Post-Op, Interesting news from my NUT today....

Recommended Posts

So I'm down about 58lbs, which I think is pretty great for being 2.5 months post-op! Though when I met with my NUT today she was concerned that I might be losing too much weight too fast and that judging by my food intake (I log everything religiously and definitely make sure I meet all of my nutrition goals daily) that I am not getting enough carbs nor enough calories in my daily diet.

I keep myself at about 1,000 calories. My primary foods are various steamed veggies and mainly fish (with a little variation with beef once in a while but mostly fish!). I work outside doing a highly physical job and am burning more than I am taking in, apparently... also causing me to feel exhausted every day (I thought this was just from work.. but I suppose I could see how it might be from a lack of carbs)!.

I drink about a gallon of Water a day and log everything... I'm neurotic about it. I was just thrown aback I suppose by being told that I was losing weight too quickly, needed more carbs and more calories. She recommended that maybe I try snacking three times a day between meals with a healthy carb since I have trouble getting carbs in, in general.

Has anyone else had this trouble or noticed any issues like this? I feel like they told us not to snack, that the body will still be going through changes for at least 6 months or so... so the rapid weight loss is normal until the body sort of stabilizes a bit? I could be wrong... but just thought I'd pose this to everyone here and see if anyone else had similar experiences.. maybe?

Thank you! :)

That isn't too much weight loss in that time frame for a WLS person. In fact, it seems fairly normal for us. The NUT knows you had surgery, right? I am surprised they said to up your carbs this soon. I would have thought they would up your Protein. I don't know if I do this right but I always try to have a snack in the morning and one in the afternoon and it's Protein. Usually a yogurt or some string cheese or a bit of cottage cheese. How many grams of protein are you getting in each day? (I'm not a NUT so don't have an educated opinion but all these NUTs don't seem to know what they are doing either, especially for WLS). There are several people on there that I hope post because they have blogged and done some great things and seem to have this down better than me.

And also--congratulations on the weight loss!!

I would listen to your NUT.

It sounds counterintuitive, but not eating enough can be as bad as eating too much. Since you are physically active, you need to make sure you are losing fat and not muscle. Based on what you describe, your body may be consuming muscle which is not only counterproductive to losing weight efficiently and effectively, it can be really dangerous.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
