Extremely tired 3 weeks post-op

Recommended Posts

Hi!!

I had my sleeve surgery 3 weeks ago today (March 23). So far, I seem to be doing pretty well with everything except that I still do not have much energy and am extremely tired just about all the time. I feel I am getting the appropriate amounts of Protein and fluids. Before surgery I did use a CPAP machine, but was told not to use it after surgery for at least 2 weeks. I did call the surgeon's office today, but didn't really get any answers. I will be going to my primary Dr. tomorrow and will discuss with him too.

I guess I am reaching out to those of you who are further along in their journey to see how you felt at 3 weeks post-op. Is this a "norm", or should I be concerned.

Hi Carsonsmom,

I had my sleeve surgery on 3.16.16. I am still having some problems with low energy. I really believe it is your body learning to deal with the change in the amount of food that you are taking in. Dehydration can be a part of it. I am actually sitting in an infusion center at the moment getting fluids and Vitamins due to Dehydration and the fact I am not getting much food in.

I think over time we will start to feel better it will start to turn around.

Are you back using your CPAP? I would definitely start again!

You had a really big surgery, I think we for get that. If you are getting in your Protein and liquids that is good. Did your surgeon ask you to take any supplements such as B-12? I take that twice a week.

After surgery I was tired for about 6 weeks or so, then my energy took off. The more weight I lose the better it gets.

Hang in there!

Thanks @@KristenLe! I've decided to try using my CPAP tonight to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks @@ShrinkingPeach!! Yes I am taking Multivitamins, D3, Calcium and B12. I've been taking all of these for about 2 weeks now.

I can completely relate! I couldn't imagine how people went back to work at only 2 weeks!

The surgery is bigger than most believe and when you get used to it, you realize how much you managed to overcome. I promise you, it gets better. Stick to your Vitamins and rest as much as possible. If you work it can be tough. I'm a single mom and work and laughed when the nurses have me that advice but it helped so much with recovery. At about week 5 you'll wake up feeling a little normal and it'll get better from there!

Thank you @@Delta07!! I am now at almost 6 weeks out and I did start getting a little more energy about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Also, I started using my CPAP again at 3 weeks, which has also helped. Now if I could get my arthritis pain under control. My right knee is a total mess (bone on bone) and has been this way for around 5 years now. I already had my left knee done but am holding off as long as possible to do the right---hoping losing the weight will help with this.

Mine hurt a while too. I remember thinking wtf? Lol it'll get better too but if you need surgery, I would think it's safe to wait til you heal from one before the next

@@CarsonsMom I am beyond encouraged reading your weight loss success - I'm a little heavier than you but similar stats and I hope I do as well as you've done since surgery! Very impressive! :-)

Thanks @@KristenLe!! I haven't been officially weighed at the Dr office since April 22, but I think I have lost another 6 pounds since then. Have you had your surgery yet?

No, I have to go through 6 months of supervised weight loss so I'm hoping I can schedule surgery in September! I will be dancing in the streets if I do as well as you! :-)

I am six weeks post surgery and I am still struggling with fatigue. I am drinking my Water, getting in my required Protein and taking Vitamins. I think it just takes time for bodies to recover. I am trying to listen to my body more and not push myself. I do not want to get sick by overdoing it. Good Luck

I agree @@Delta07!!! I made that mistake about 3 years ago. I had a triple fusion of my left ankle July 2013, left knee replacement February 2014 and triple fusion of my right ankle July 2014. Unfortunately this last one did not heal correctly and I will have to make a decision at some point if the pain is unbearable to have the surgery redone!! That is something I really have to think about hard since it means another 10 weeks of non weight bearing again.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
