Do I tell people I'm having surgery or keep it a secret? Advice greatly received!

Recommended Posts

I'm having the gastric balloon in a couple of weeks and I'm not telling any friends or family. I want to be sure it works first, and then I'll decide if I want to share it. I don't want to be influenced by anyone else's opinion.

Someone who I know had the surgery a couple of years ago and when anyone asked about how she lost so much weight ,her response was I eat A LOT less! Best answer ever..... Totally truthful!

The only people I told were my husband, sister and my children. I don't believe it's anyone else's business.

If someone comments or asks how I've lost so much, I simply tell the, the truth in that I watch everything that goes in my mouth, I cut way back on portions and I move a lot more than before. All true, just not all the truth.

Don't let anyone tell you this is the easy way out. There's still a lifelong commitment to be made and nurtured!

Best of luck to you!

You're afraid of being judged.

And you're going to announce your WLS on Facebook?

What could possibly go wrong?

I went on Facebook shortly before my surgery after first making sure that I told family and close friends first. I have had no negative comments and lots of prayer and support. For me it worked well. I will keep updating. I never mentioned my starting weight- no one's business- but I am posting losses and if there is a gain or stall I will post those too. It is a way to make me accountable.

I have chosen to keep it to myself other than husband, son, sisters and four very close friends. I am sure once the weight starts coming off the questions will start to come. I have received such negativity and judgement from being over weight I really don't want any more.

When the time comes it will tell those who are supportive of me.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
